The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences acknowledged the existence of generative AI yesterday in new rule changes for its annual Oscars awards ceremony. Rather than dictate its use or require disclosures, the Academy simply says using AI doesn’t, on its own, hurt a movie’s chances — but that how it’s used could.

That seems fair.

The Brutalist used AI to improve Hungarian accents, which seems a reasonable use for it. They also used it to generate photographs of fictional buildings, which has done someone out of a job. However, someone else has to come up with the prompts and sift through the results, it just feels a bit… Cheap? Low effort?

As one studio after another began clamoring to pay Sinners’s $90 million-ish asking price, the director’s agents at WME notified them of a few strings attached. Coogler would retain final cut (a creative dispensation reserved for the industry’s crème de la crème), command first-dollar gross (that is, a percentage of box-office revenue beginning from the movie’s theatrical opening rather than waiting for the studio to turn a profit), and, most contentiously, 25 years after its release, ownership of Sinners would revert to the director.

And they say it like this is A Bad Thing, creators should have more control over the things they make - Hollywood shafting people just makes everything worse. The studios are still going to make plenty of money.

I’d guess that, while this is heading to the cinema, Amazon would be looking to start a TV series too.

Of the ones I updated I’d flag up:

• Steamboat Willy - just became PD this year and means that version of Mickey Mouse is now free to use, at least initially that means in crappy horror films.
• Laurel and Hardy: Battle of the Century - once thought to be lost except for the custard pie fight (which my Dad was a big fan of), the bulk of it has been found and it is all now PD.

Would folks be interested in a “public domain film” community? I’ve pondered starting one.

And by latest do you mean recently made PD?

It depends on the severity.

• If you are touching cloth, then it is a shart and should be relatively well contained. You just need to clean-up and perhaps discreetly dispose of your undercrackers.
• If you are touching socks, then the world has dropped out of your bottom and is pretty disastrous as everything is contaminated. You also have a larger problem as this would suggest you have food poisoning or some kind of illness and this is just the start of your problems. When I was in hospital the guy opposite me got C. difficile and the result was unexpected and borderline volcanic - that wasn’t just a bad day, it was a bad week.

My folks were great and I miss them a lot.

I’m a big fan of the Hong Kong New Wave in cinema. It’s also a handy entrance to wider Chinese films - if you like a director or actor or type of film, there are a lot more to find if you start digging.

Go and see your GP. It wasn’t a heart attack but it was a wake up call and I don’t think jumping to seeing a cardiologist will be that helpful, although a GP can refer you on if they think you need it.

I was in the foothills of heart health problems - high BP, cholesterol creeping up, etc. and the health staff were starting to express concern (suggesting I might need to go on statins). So I turned it around in two years and at my last health check my weight and bloods were all “perfect” according to the nurse. So it is doable.

However, from what you say, mental health issues may be holding you back and making important and sweeping changes to your lifestyle require effort and focus. So the GP may want to get this addressed while starting to monitor your health through regular checks. I found the checks motivating in themselves as the data can really prod you into action because you no longer can say you are probably unhealthy - it is there in stark numbers. I also suspect I was slightly gamifying it as I made beating the numbers a focus and figuring out what I needed to do to adjust each on (as lowering triglyceride levels requires different action to lowering LDL, bad cholesterol). I even made a spreadsheet.

Most people have good qualities that make them attractive (if you have none then that might be something to work on). Just treat women like they are ordinary human beings (which they are) - ask questions, listen to the answers, check back with them at a later date to see if that thing they mentioned worked out, offer to help if they have a problem, etc.

I’m fine with people getting rowdy (I went to a late screening of Spider-Man: No Way Home that was pretty raucous and it added to the fun) but I draw the line at throwing water and popcorn around as the cinema staff have to clean up that mess.
