Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When shopping, especially in fashion, do you take brand into consideration?English
2·2 days agoAbsolutely. Typically, the bigger the branding the more you pay for that and the less bang for buck you get. In second hand shopping I do often look at the brands though, because branded things are often better than no name items, but at the same price in that market (e.g. in kilo sales)

Technology@lemmy.world•Across the US, people are dismantling and destroying Flock surveillance cameras. Anger over ICE connections and privacy violations is fueling the sabotage.English
32·4 days agoHow would you take such a camera down without being spotted and tracked? Do they not look in all directions?
Not asking for all the technical details on how to take one down, just curious how so many can be taken down with so few arrests after. I guess it’s a matter of good disguises?

2·6 days agoDo I understand it right that when it comes down to it, this is a different implementation of the same thing (rendering)? I assume that this is mostly relevant for software engineers and that the end user only notices some differences in speed, if at all?

Linux@programming.dev•Linux Mint's success also means maintainer stress - The RegisterEnglish
6·7 days agoVery true about the Wayland vs X11 knowledge. I didn’t learn about that until quite a while after startint to use Mint. Even know I don’t really umderstand what it does (something rendering and windows?), it doesn’t seem to make much of a difference in day to day use anyways.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What Fediverse instances would you recommend to others?English
19·13 days agoYou’re only missing content if your instance defederates from another and vice versa or if you block instances yourself.
It might be a bit easier to find new communities at first by scrolling through the local feed on a bigger community, but you can also do this without making an account there.
I think stability and speed of an instance are better selection criteria since they effect your experience much more. Piefed instances tend to offer a smooth and fast experience. E.g. piefed.social, piefed.zip, and the others mentioned in one of the other comments.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google Translate is vulnerable to prompt injectionEnglish
5·17 days agoFrom my understanding, most LLMs work by repeatedly putting the processing output back into the input until the result is good enough. This means that in many ways the input and the output are the same thing from the perspective of the LLM and therefore inseparable.

Technology@lemmy.world•The upgrade argument for desktops doesn't stand up anymoreEnglish
7·22 days agoThe title of this article just doesn’t match reality. It really only (maybe) applies to very high end systems that are already pushing the limits of all components. Most people don’t have the money to waste on that and have plenty of room to upgrade their hardware for a looong time.
If you don’t need much (e.g. no gaming, 3D rendering, etc.), especially if you don’t need a dedicated gpu, then you can upgrade for at least a decade before running into issues. To be fair, a laptop should last a decade as well in that case, but at a higher prices and while being less repairable.

31·22 days agoAlthough I agree with the sickening greed part, I don’t think it makes sense to make educational use free without have another system in place that pays for the writing of educational books. There’s plenty of content that imo should be free for educational use, but educational books only have an income from educational use, it’s their whole target audience. No income, no book :/
