I really hope they come with a wayland native version in the near future.
This, proton and an app I need for work are all that’s left before I can trash xwayland… can’t wait!
dropdown menus now appear correctly.
I feel like I’ve heard this before. Anyway, if it’s true they’ve finally fixed a bug that’s almost two years old
I had this until I switched to flatpak version a year ago. That helped both with graphics driver issues and the stability of the main client for me.
cries in Ubuntu
You can use Flatpak as well?
I assumed I could, but (also assumed) it was difficult to do so and would introduce fuckyness. I was wrong!
The problem with using flat pack version of Steam for me was the weird folder structure for installing games. I like my stuff to be easy to remember and human readable. I.e. Home/Games instead of 726284783/737384/*installed game
Dropdown bug still happens even in win10
I was hoping there would be something about resource usage. Curse you, steamwebhelper
Oh yeah. If you leave a steam page open, it’ll create a very slow memory leak. Left store page open for about a week, came back to 6gb steamwebhelper xd
Wait really?! Feel like that’s a bug that really needs addressing
what kind of sane person is gonna leave a steam page open for over a week, though?
I can see it easily being accidentally left open if you have a busy desktop and don’t regularly restart your PC
In my case, i use multiple workspaces. Had a workspace for gaming set up and left the window on the store page. Had a busy week so I didn’t game. I usually don’t turn off my computer because I contribute to Folding@Home at night. Week flies by and I start to wonder why my ram is full and investigate :D
I mean… I often open steam for something and then kind of forget about it.
What kind of sane person is gonna debug and track down a memory leak, though? Just buy more ram
memory leak’s at a rate that doesn’t matter (~30mb/hour). That makes it hard to track down & reproduce. Also, solution would be to just navigate to your steam library or just not leave the window open like that :p
Also not a fan of downloads eating a core.
Isn’t that just because they download a compressed format?
Encrypted and compressed. But it’s way beyond what I expect that to take.
All I really want is a context menu to open the game’s Wine prefix directory.
yes please. It’s super annoying in general but on deck it gets old so fast that it happens in the past.
i hope it finally fixes the bug that makes steam have alzheimers when it comes to windows size and position.
because I’m sick to fucking death of having to constantly resize and reposition the windows every time i switch between small/large and when launching.
Its so bad that I gave up and just started browsing steam store via browser.
I hate that it steals the focus like 5 times when launching. I’ll try to click off to do something while it’s starting, but it steals input focus. I get doing it once when the app finishes loading, but I really don’t need to stare at the startup progress bar.
Steam, as a program, has fundamentally gotten worse with every update ever since they switched to electron/chromium
remember for a while they tried to take small mode away from us.
cause they are going down the same route that everything goes. Its gotten popular, so now they are trying to turn it into a social media platform.
I dont want a social media playform. theres already enough of those. I just want a small, slick, low resource, easy to use, quick to load program to buy my games and launch them.
Small mode? I had completely forgotten that it existed. I didn’t know anyone used that.
Same, never heard of it, but now I want it.
I agree with the poster, I don’t want any of that social nonsense, I just want to play games. As long as they keep developing Proton, I can forgive quite a lot.
Steam has always been a social gaming platform…in fact it wasn’t even always a storefront.
I’ve had steam since HL2 launched.
No it hasnt.
and no, it wasnt a storefront then either, because it was DRM/game decrypter and multiplayer server finder. They had no other games for sale at the time.
multiplayer server finder
and what imaginarily clever point do you think you are making with that.
I would love to see valve eventually have a whole team dedicated to their own OS and make it a super viable and stable distro.
Please fix the issue where you change my default graphic card settings in the desktop file. It’s super annoying to have to launch from the cli after an update.
OMG thats what that is… I thought I was crazy
I don’t know if this would help but it might be worth a try, make a file immutable by
sudo chattr +i /file/location
If it doesn’t work change it back,
sudo chattr -i /file/location
I will try this thanks.
Does copying the desktop file to the applications directory in ~/.local help?
I don’t know I haven’t tried that as I can go in and change the file, and set PrefersNonDefaultGPU=false and it works after that.
I really would like steamwebhelper to stop crashing randomly. It breaks game recording, and it doesn’t come back until you restart steam.
So many good clips lost :(
Still waiting for a fix to make Steam library sharing usable on a multi user system without quietly failing with nothing showing
Yes please, I’ve just been hit by this yesterday. Though there are workarounds… But they aren’t pretty.
Mine is to just create a separate user to use steam… Kinda like Steam Deck, but I hate relogging every time I want to play a game
How about you fix cs2 for Linux?
If ProtonDB says that it’s working then it’s working, most likely something ain’t right with your setup.
Did you even read the page?
I’m playing cs2 and everything is working bro
resolution changes lead to gui breaking and inaccurate mouse movements unless in windowed mode
Audio breaks forcing people to create a special config file for Pipewire
Gamescope does not work in comp (developed by valve) and has given vac bans for even using it
The FPS is lower than windows and has micro stutters when compared with windows (Nvidia reflex?)
- borderless window mode it is. you might be wanting to run exclusive fullscreen but that’s only an advantage on windows and their terrible compositor
- i’m just on pipewire natively and things are ok. i only noticed that sound can get flaky when you’re coasting too close to 100% cpu
- yeah gamescope might not work, though it doesn’t really give cs2 any advantage - fsr is already in the game. if you’re trying to do stretched 4:3 maybe use your screen’s upscaler?
- for me there was something similar on nvidia, had to toggle vsync and/or msaa on/off, not sure which combination did it. on amd it’s fine. maybe one of those things where you either wait for nvidia to not prioritize big ai, or you give the new NVK driver a try.
- this does not fix it
- it was working fine for me too, until an update to CS2 broke audio for me and I needed a patch
- screens upscaler? Like change the monitor resolution? That’s the only option with how broken no. 1 is
- ProtonDB shows that the FPS drops also occur with AMD
I own a 4k monitor, but my GPU can’t really handle it, FSR doesn’t really help because for some reason it also doesn’t reduce Vram usage so the lag continues, I am forced to either play windowed or reduce my monitor resolution to either 2k or 1080p for better FPS, and occasionally CS2 assigns some vital graphics shit to ram when Vram is full and it STAYS in ram, making my FPS hard stuck on 40-50 FPS.
This game was made to be run on even 2gb cards, how does it struggle on Linux like so?
I play on the LOWEST settings, I got 100 FPS on Cyberpunk 2077 high settings w/o rt 2k Res, how does CS2 make me suffer the most out of every other game in my library?
I wish steam just made wine work instead of having a half assed Linux port

You pirate games because Steam opens a window?
EDIT: Seems you’re starting to resort to cheap attacks on me because you got downvoted
Gabe Newell said it himself. Piracy isn’t a price issue it’s a service issue. If the steam client is shit. Then we’re going to go pirate
But it’s really not. It has bugs, but the overall service is fantastic.
I agree. I was just defending that other person. Still think it’s ass the the steam client is a second class citizen on Linux. It’s still filled with so many bugs you don’t see on windows
I wouldn’t know since I’ve never used it on Windows, I created my Steam account when they started supporting Linux.
I guess I’m just grateful a major company is making desktop apps and compatibility layers for Linux, so I’m willing to look past a few issues.
There’s still no light theme, you can’t upload videos, screenshots on your feed take like 20% of the screen with no proper full-screen view (it opens another window after two clicks that you have to close later), likes and comments don’t sync well between the friends feed and the game feed, and this list goes on and on. Steam client is far from fantastic. It’s a half-baked product with inconsistent user experience.
Hmm, I guess none of that bothers me:
- I prefer dark theme
- I don’t care about videos/screenshots/social stuff aside from “wanna join my game?” - I use a separate chat for that
- feed?
But I can see how it can be frustrating if you use those features.
I share clean steam files for the ones I buy too. What you gonna do about it?
So you enjoy pirating games. Great! More power to you.
But then let’s not pretend it’s because of the steam UI.
I said it’s one of the reasons. Let’s not speak for each other.
Are you a steam fanboy or something?
You never owned an nvidia card or are you just shilling for steam?
Not sure wh the downvotes. I had to switch from gnome to KDE for the problem to go away. Steam client beta branch didn’t do anything
I’m on nvidia and it’s such an irritating bug cause a lot of the times games don’t launch or work properly cause of the steam window in the background. It’s a legit issue, idk why steam fanboys are mad.
Thanks, I’ll try kde as you said. Never knew kde fixed it.
Have you tried flatpak instead of native install?
Checked and no they haven’t lol.
I don’t think this used to be an issue because I used to use desktop icon launchers in the past, which makes it weird that it somehow changed. I think maybe after the big new UI update?
This has been an issue like 2 years maybe or 1. I checked too :(
How bout anti-cheat, so we can play multiplayer games? Please.
We have that. Depends wholly on the developer to implement it right.
Depends on Publisher allowing Linux Support.
Which AFAIK means to merely check a box and steam takes care of it.
Just drop the anit-cheat requirement and let is handle cheating directly, with vote-to-kick, like we did back in the day.
