As an American I’m embarrassed. All people should have the right of self determination.

No one would wait for the UN if they could take matters into their own hands. But the US is giving so many weapons to “Israel” that it is nearly impossible to do anything.

Hamas got a pretty good opportunity to start developing specialized weapons, train its troops, and build a huge tunnel system under Gaza. The problem is Arabic countries are either too afraid of starting an attack on the American protectorate or are too occupied with some sort of civil unrest/civil war. So “Israel” can just use all the weapons it got to demolish Gaza and kill its people as a punishment for the “aqsa flood” attack.

Most Arab countries have normalized relations or are in the process of normalizing them with Israel.

A right thing. And not a very substantial one. But don’t sell the UK short. The government might be despicable, but the massive marches in London by the people have been inspiring. The power of that crowd needs to be channelled into direct action.

Oh, I didn’t mean it like that, I really meant the Gov, who are utterly terrible, and the right wing media circus, who manage to be even worse.

The two-state solution is - and has long been - UK official policy under governments of all three parties. So it’s unsurprising the UK would vote in favour.

The weird thing is that this is also US policy. Why the hell would the US vote against this?

The Israel lobby is exceedingly powerful in the US.

No, I get that, and that might explain if the US changed its policy on the two-state solution. But it hasn’t - Biden has spoken publicly on two-state being the only viable outcome even within the last few weeks.

Israel really has us by the balls, don’t they? Maybe I missed something in history class but I’m pretty sure that the United States was founded on the principle of self determination.

Self determination for who? For rich, land-owning, white males.

The US was founded on the same genocidal settler-colonialism as Israel.

The US was founded because the king said stop going further west and killing indigenous peoples. They took offense to this and a few years later threw some tea in the water.

Does the right to self determination include the ability to elect anyone they want? Or are they only allowed to elect parties that are approved by Israel and the West?

Addressing the Middle East, the Assembly took up the report “Permanent sovereignty of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and of the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan over their natural resources” (document A/78/467), adopting the eponymous resolution by a recorded vote of 158 in favour to 6 against (Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Nauru, Palau, United States), with 13 abstentions.

Why would the US vote against this? The two-state solution is US government policy!

I think this might break the rules since the title doesn’t match the article. Maybe you could post a press release of this instead? 🤔

The UN doesn’t really do press releases for resolutions. Relying on secondary sources is, generally, not so good.
