It was originally made for people who were fatally sick, there were laws that let them die, but the problem was that they effectively had no teeth because anyone could come up with any reason (usually going against the patient’s wishes) not to go through with it. The government threw their hands up and said “fuck it, if you want to die, you can die” which has naturally lead to people offing themselves to get out of debt.

Their solution to this problem is to push for mental health resources and build more rental properties; obviously it hasn’t been doing jack shit because they’re liberal bandaid “”“solutions”“” that aren’t even in the right direction of the fundamental societal rot at the core of it all.

Oh it gets worse, they’ve tried to open it up to those suffering from mental illness/depression and I believe they’re planning on re-introducing it in 2024.

As someone who struggles with depression, this is terrifying. Just the thought of seeking out help from a medical professional and their response being “have you considered killing yourself?” really discourages me from having an open, honest conversation with my healthcare provider.

In my view, there’s nothing wrong with idea of people having the option to end their life with dignity. For example, if you have terminal cancer and you’re suffering then you may not wish to prolong the suffering. The issue in the context of Canada is that this is a coercive measure due to lack of social support systems. This was a famous case of a person who did not wish to die, but thought it would be preferable to becoming homeless. And I think this whole case is great example of just how deeply immoral capitalism is.

My grandfather took the option a while back when nit was pretty new and the eugenics angle hadn’t become entangled. He was dying of COPD and chose to cut things off on his own terms surrounded by family instead of letting himself degrade for maybe years and putting my grandmother through all that. That was the situation this was advertised as when it was under debate for legislation and then a couple years later, really a very short period of time all of this awful shit that was not at all part of the deal suddenly came with it.
