There was a concerted effort by some to recruit of reddit to the fediverse. They have an “anti-tankie” bias and so directed users to instances accordingly. They’re currently recruiting off reddit to piefed as well.
It wasn’t a psyop as much as people that liked lemmy and wanted it to grow taking action and the government propaganda brainworms steering it in a more pro-US direction.
