It has outpaced some of the year’s heaviest hitters including Resident Evil Requiem, Mewgenics, and Marathon.

Should I play the first first or is starting with this one ok?

I used to be very anti-card game but Inscryption was very fun and I’m trying to branch out to some stuff outside of my comfort zone. Any other recommendations for card games?

Sts2 ,in every conceivable way, supersedes its predecessor , rendering it obsolete.

There’s minimal story, so you’re not missing anything.

      Just jump in and play.

That said, Slay the Spire regularly goes on sale for like 90% off. You can pick the game up for under $3.

Not disagreeing, but it’s hard to imagine a masterpiece of a game being rendered obsolete. There’s beauty in its deceptive simplicity, the game really was exactly what it set out to be. For example, there’s a large chunk of the Minecraft playerbase that would argue prerelease is the superior version of the game. There’s clarity and refinement in less.

It’s kind of like (and this is obviously a departure from the card game genre) Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is considered the ultimate game of the franchise despite their being several proceding iterations after it. I’m even a huge fan of the 2nd one despite it being significantly more minimal. Something about the 2d sprites and was very charming.

As a mechanical game sts(1+2) is superior to inscryption, however do not expect any kind of narrative driven gameplay, gameplay element changes, or real interaction with the opposite side other than fighting.

I really really enjoyed inscryption, but I only played it through once. I currently have around 20 hours in sts2 and I have no idea how much in 1.

All of that being said, I do think that you can get the feel of a puzzler from slay the spire, at least in its most intense moments. Trying to find the right solution to survive. If you enjoyed the card based elements of inscryption, you will enjoy slay the spire.

Also, just skip to 2 instead of playing one. If you have any friends that like the series, try the coop too! It’s really fun and well done.

Edit: I seen you asked for other recommendations, and I would suggest monster train 2. Again, no real story so it doesn’t matter that you’re picking it up at 2.

Unfortunately inscryption is pretty unique in the genre, which is what made it so great.

I will definitely give those a try. I know that Slay the Spire has been lionized as one of the best card games I just have always hesitated to try it for some reason. But now that 2 is out I’ll definitely be picking it up. Monster Train I am not super familiar with but I will check it out.

Yeah the vibes with Inscryption were just…like it was a card game but I felt legitimately unnerved. The music and the sound effects made me viscerally uncomfortable, and then the way Leshy watched you when you walked around the cabin was creepy as shit.

It kind of opened my eyes to card games in general and (not that I didn’t already know this from games like Disco Elysium, Subnautica, Soma, Outer Wilds, etc.) The fact that smaller budget titles often time were significantly more worthwhile than AAA stuff.

Exactly. I was never into card games until I played Inscryption. It just clicked so well. I made it through the story and now about every month or so I will boot up Kaycee’s Mod to do a few playthroughs!

I would’ve never played Balatro if it wasn’t for Inscryption. :)
