Samsung is retiring it’s messages app, and I don’t want to install Google messages to replace it.

What apps are you using instead and what do you like or hate about them?

Edit: thank you for the suggestions :) This is more options than I was expecting!

Fossify messages. Not the most feature filled app, does only the basics but because I don’t use SMS as my main communication method it is more enough to receive the odd 2FA text

I’ve been using Fossify Messages. Pretty bare-bones, but does the job since I don’t use SMS too much. I’m glad that it can intercept the Class 0 messages that my carrier uses for billing so it doesn’t occupy my whole screen every time I call or text.

I only use SMS/MMS when I do 2auth or a carrier wants to spam me with shortcodes for top-up and promos and I fall for. Other than that, I don’t use it at all. Fossify fit the bill for a clean, easy app that doesn’t glean personal info every time I receive/send a message.

The Fossify suite has a messages app. Available on Fdroid. No internet access, no trackers.

It’s not as polished visually as the mainstream apps but works absolutely fine.

Can confirm! The newest fork of Quik has really improved the app! People reliably see my messages like they did on the Google Messages app.

I just use Google Messages, but I’m signed out of the app. Actually, no Google acct on my whole phone. I stick to F-Droid for apps of I need em.

The way I see it, mousy sms stiff goes through the carrier servers I’d not Google, and at least Messages is RCS. However, I’m running XMPP and jmp.chat for a phone number to test out switching entirely and setting up friends and family on my server. Trying to go full hermit mode.

So far it’s great! Cheogram works well with 1 on 1 messages, but I struggled at first with making sure it worked well. It wants to initially enforce encryption but the most you can do with non xmpp users is TLS security. Wish I could host a bigger server to have all friends and family sign up in order to get them using protest secure messaging.

I have been using Textra for about 6 years, on multiple phones. Never looked too deep into it, but the feature set is everything I want and more.

Same for Textra. Paid a couple bucks for it a long time ago and I haven’t had many issues. I think the only issue being that I couldn’t get it backed up when I moved to my most recent phone which was frustrating.

Love Textra. Simple does what it supposed to and has per contact color coding for messages, can block numbers and set delayed outgoing messages per contact too. Displays MMS, pictures adnd reactions for Apple as expected.
