For real. Let’s say I make parts for nuclear reactor, and I want to acquire a scented candle. There is no one who deals in candles that has any interested in acquiring nuclear reactors. And even if you put in a massive amount of searching and somehow found some crazy fringe overlap of a person interested in exchanging those things, the value of my nuclear reactor is a trillion times greater than the value of the candle that I’m looking to acquire.

Yes, but also don’t fucking smoke where other people have to smell and inhale it if they don’t want too. That part is NOT what all the previous generations fought so hard for

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is your fandom? What is the most controversial opinion you have relating to your fandom?
6·4 days agoDoctor Who - Peter Capaldi’s era was awful. Just really, really bad. I think he’s a good actor, but the show was garbage during his tenure.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL it takes roughly 600 to 800 grapes to make a standard bottle of wine
6·5 days agoHuh interesting, that’s different from what I’ve tasted and read in articles, but it’s entirely possible that your particular variety is superior

7·5 days agoAs wine yes, but as an eating grape definitely not

10·5 days agoNot surprising, I’d guess a wine bottle can hold about 200 whole grapes of the varieties that are grown for wine which iirc are smaller sized grapes.
Why do useful FOSS things always have the worst names that make it hard to spread.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Complete lunacy. A toaster... really... a toaster?
24·6 days agoAnd instead of paying 20 bucks for a toaster, these smart toaster allow you to spend several hundred on it instead! I just looked it up, and this isn’t an exaggeration. The prices i saw ranged from about 200 - 500 dollars

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•There was a time when people had to deal with all of these being separate
14·6 days agoYoung people today are increasingly choosing to have separate dedicated-purpose devices. And that’s probably a good thing. It decreases distractions, lets you focus on what you’re actually trying to do, and makes you less addicted to your phone, and avoids the always-connected evils that come with it
That’s not a good analogy. The entropy of the universe can only ever go up, but local entropy can and extremely often does decrease.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Someone drove their car on elecetad metro in Seattle for MILES
5·6 days agoSeems very plausible. IMO a drivers license should have mandatory retesting every 10 years. And the driving test should be much more thorough

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Someone drove their car on elecetad metro in Seattle for MILES
8·6 days agoGreat additional info, thanks!
Seeing the pic of it makes it a microscopic iota easier to understand how the mistake happened, but very clearly any person who’s capable of driving shouldn’t ever make that mistake. And even if a person accidentally started turning on to the tracks, any mentally capable driver would’ve immediately recognized that it was totally wrong and backed out of it.
Can you imagine how terribly wrong the car motion would’ve felt as soon as the metal tracks rose above the road surface?

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Cyclists Break Far Fewer Road Rules Than Motorists, Finds New Video Study
461·6 days agoThat last sentence is especially important. The vast majority of the times when cyclists break traffic laws is WHEN THEY’RE FORCED TO.
When there’s no bike infrastructure that allows bikers to travel safely and adequately then they’re left with no other choice
Want bikers to follow traffic laws more? Literally just make a reasonable way for them to do it

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Interesting how if you live close to something famous like the pyramids or the NYC skyline you just take it for granted.
7·10 days agoI lived my whole life in nyc and i try to imagine what it would be like to come from a smaller place and see skyscrapers for the first time. I can never really imagine what it’s like
I don’t follow. What are you saying is correlated to vaccine usage? Wealth?
In fact it was a big news story recently when a study shows that vaccines in general reduce the risk of getting dementia. So there’s even more benefit than you thought!

I think that was a particular brand that some people started to use as a generic name like kleenex
