  • I also liked that it doesn’t say that all followers of an ideology are good or bad people. A lot of media that tries to tackle ideologies just make everyone in the general direction of an opposing ideology horrible people. In Disco Elysium is not as black and white. There are good and bad people in every broad ideology. Are you a bad person, just because you believe in capitalism? No. Are you a good person, just because you believe in communism? Also no. Disco Elysium is very nuanced while making it’s cases.

  • Something I got from Spoony which I really liked:

“There is nothing there.” -> “You don’t see/perceive anything.”

Even if there isn’t something there, keep the players on the edge and guessing how good their skill worked. And it makes it just a little bit less gamey if the character doesn’t have some divine insight that there really is nothing there instead of deciding that their skills just show that there is nothing there and be happy with that - or not.

Of course, extend that to everything. Pull away from the facts of the game and put more ambiguous language in.

  • It actually helped me from learning the 5 Ws in kindergarten.

Where? What? How many (“Wie viele” in German)? What? Wait.

I don’t have to make a call often, but all the more important is that I have that in the back of my head. I go through the first four points and then I shut up to for further questions, instructions or just a “okay, got that, sending someone”.

I think that is something that everybody should learn early everywhere. Everyone can only benefit from people making short, focused emergency calls.
