  • This is true, China doesn’t care. I’m actually confused about the narrative around China wanting to take TSMC. Even the most cursory glace at the situation should make it obvious this isn’t one of China’s goals. This is because these EUV machines don’t work on magic. They work on knowledge and spare parts. Even in the unlikely scenario that China somehow invades and these machines aren’t destroyed by either China or the retreating Taiwanese, they aren’t going to be able to operate them and more importantly get spare parts to keep them running. They’d at best be used to disassemble and review.

All of this ignores the fact that China is already at 5nm using their own equipment anyway. For the extra 2nm of difference between TSMC’s 3nm to SMIC’s 5nm isn’t large enough to rationalize anything close to what they’re talking about. It’d be cheaper to just keep subsidizing the Chinese industry rather than invading.

All of this is to say, that China may or may not invade, but TSMC isn’t on the list of reasons. If anything, it’s on the opposite end. China has a LOT of motivation to bomb TSMC to prevent the west from getting chips as if TSMC is gone, then suddenly Chinese 5nm are pretty much the most advanced chips in the world (besides Samsung). Thus, the real conclusion is we need to invest in Samsung, which surprisingly isn’t happening for whatever reason is beyond me.

  • China has said they will bail out the regular people. What they’re doing is they’re buying the homes at a discounted price from the people and turning them into subsidized housing. To quote the article:

“We will scale up the building and supply of government-subsidized housing and improve the basic systems for commodity housing to meet people’s essential need for a home to live in and their different demands for better housing,”

So there’s no bailout for the property developers but they are controlling the loss for regular folks.

I’m sorry people downvoted you without explaining that. I know it’s hard to read the entire article sometimes.

  • No, and that’s the problem. Ever since Covid, people are leaving major cities and moving to more affordable locations. This is largely due to this new work from home culture. Thus, a lot of these grand skyscraper projects are falling apart globally, the news just likes to focus on China, which in fairness is the largest failure of all the nations.

It’s also important to note that while there is an abandoned skyscraper by a Chinese developer in LA, there are also abandoned skyscrapers in NYC and SF that has nothing to do with China. It’s just a bad market for new buildings since people are leaving cities.

  • That’s literally not the article I linked. Also we are talking about a call to a ceasefire, which China has called for on both conflicts.

    *Edit: Also

Beijing supporting the Kremlin’s plans economically rather than openly amid international pressure.

China is also the US’s second largest trade partner. Your article is just repeating that yes, China will sell to countries that commit war crimes. They never said they would stop and your article is loudly proclaiming it. That’s nice, but irrelevant.

  • That’s exactly what they’re saying. They are allowing military transit of Chinese ships and aren’t building up defensive islands and it’s working out for them. To China’s point, that’s what they’re trying to get everyone to do. They want to be the only military in the area, they’re not going to do anything else.

China’s whole argument is that handing over your corner of the SCS isn’t going to make any major difference. Malaysia is agreeing and it’s important to note that also is still making military and security agreements with Australia. In other words, besides Chinese patrols nothing will change.

NOW, that said, what right does China have to do that? It’s on legally shaky ground at best. I’m not trying to argue that China should have the right to do this. I’m just pointing out that what you’re trying to make a “gotcha” isn’t a “gotcha” but instead quite literally exactly what’s happening.

  • I’m so tired of people trying to ridiculously imply that everything coming out of Huawei is fake. The argument doesn’t even make sense as this isn’t from Huawei, this is an engineering sample given to an end user.

I realize you’re not exactly saying that, but it really gets on my nerves these days. For example, when the Kirin 9000s came out, people were saying Huawei was lying about it being a 7nm chip and that it was made in Taiwan from old stock or whatever. The problem with those claims are the only reason we knew it was a 7nm chip was because a CANADIAN company opened it up and determined it was indeed a 7nm chip. Huawei didn’t say anything and people were calling them liars for what Canadians were saying. It’s why there was the 4.9999G jokes since Huawei never claimed the 9000s was 5G.

Similarly in this case, it’s an engineering sample. Huawei again didn’t say anything. If you’re going to call someone a liar the person you’re accusing should have at least said something.
