I will bite. Not unlike an increase in minimum wage, it increases competition at the margin among landlords, which increases amenities, and encourages families and economic activity. It needs to also be accompanied by enforcement of landlord citations as well as empty housing penalties though in order to have its full effect of reversing the trend of out of state management of private residential property and encourages self-ownership over time and better landlords. The empty housing penalties are because the landlords primary use of the properties is capital and so an empty unit is often more profitable in value than the cost of it sitting empty. Laws need to tip the scale to increase supply of housing and force their hands to release it back to people who can take on personal responsibility of the unit, whether that be a next door landlord or ideally a rent to own tenant or owner living there.

If full time Walmart employees need government assistance programs to afford food and pay their rent, is it not Walmart who is leaning on government assistance?

They don’t even really need to wait. Check out the lawsuit against RealPage. https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/investigations/realpage-lawsuit/
Kinda worse tbh, because it used to be landlords would have to arrange a group call where they’d conspire to fuck us. Now it’s done by companies like RealPage automatically.
Think you’re just experiencing strawberries being a cheaper fruit by weight than raspberries, but I appreciate the diligence.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•(How) Do men and women engage in (the same) hobbies in dfferent ways?
2·10 days agoI think it largely depends on the hobby and how general you want to be about it. I was talking with my wife about this a few years ago and we came to the conclusion that I had a lot of examples of my dad finding solutions to obstacles on his own to where I feel like I can solve almost any issue solo, it’s just a matter of how much time and resources do I have to give. Her upbringing was that a service had to be called and a temporary solution put in place. The temporary solution worked but was miserable in the meantime. Also she wasn’t part of the temp or permanent solution whereas I was “holding the flashlight”.
It’s also interesting because my sister experienced the same examples as me, but because I was here and willing she kinda just lets me be dad in fixing situations now. I think there’s an eagerness that men bring with often misguided confidence until they do it enough to get good and my wife would say she wants something to be easy from the beginning before she’ll confidently take on the task without me. This is going to be very different couple to couple though, since I can recall a lot of men who act helpless about problems within my ability to control. Often their wives take on that role instead and they seek women who do that sorta stuff because it’s a great team dynamic.
Probably rambling too much for the TLDR to be, “it depends” my bad
Have you ever been knocked out before? Instant time travel into the future. Probably something like that without the ringing sound in your head from whatever hit you. Oh, and also that you never wake up.
I like the idea of reincarnation, but maybe it’s my antitheist limited brain, transitioning to a creature with vastly different intelligence or central nervous system seems like the me I am still ceases to exist. Same vibes doesn’t even really check out when folks with brain ailments go through massive personality changes and I wouldn’t ever expect someone to “maintain their vibe” through that change.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is there any list of banned words on Lemmy)? I'm curious what the removed words actually are.
6·12 days agoYour instance rules apply to you, so .ml, as do the instance rules of the community you’re posting on, so lemmy.world, and finally the individual community rules also apply. If you do not follow rules of third party instances it’s possible you will be banned from those instances, but if you’re okay with .ml and .world at the same time then I doubt you’d stumble upon many other issues outside of state censorship maybe as someone mentioned for Chinese instances.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Could the Supreme Court overturning Marbury vs Madison be a way to repeal the US Constitution?
3·13 days agoThey wouldn’t overturn it and give back their power, but I could definitely see them modifying it to grab more power.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Whats the most disgusting thing you've ever put in your mouth?
2·15 days agoIt’s the only pill I couldn’t take. I ended up getting vancomyacin instead, which is a lot more expensive. It felt ridiculous, but when you throw up after taking it you don’t really think it’ll go better the second time.
I.never tried the pineapple trick. I did try coating it in thick stuff like honey. It pierced right through

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Whats the most disgusting thing you've ever put in your mouth?
6·15 days agoProlly a spider that had crawled into my fountain drink straw or viewed another way when I vomited up a metronidazole pill that I had worked very very hard to swallow without tasting and immediately vomited again as a result. If you’re unfamiliar it’s the antibiotic pill that makes you taste metal.
Probably the main reason for not having high value currency in the US is because a CTR would be triggered simply for having one. It would sorta make more sense to put tracking chips on them all than to individually log every transaction ever using one.
Smaller bills let you avoid the treasury department’s checks and balances on potential criminal activity much easier.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•[Solved] Why can't I apply SPF50 sunscreen twice to get SPF100 protection?
5·16 days agoI wouldn’t say our tests were perfect, just smearing it on cardboard, but we did test like 10 different ones. Few things were obvious, like that the coral reef destroying ingredient ones were more effective than the more eco ones, and that banana boat kinda sucked. Neutrogena was good and even their 15 spf was just about as dark as their 30. I think coppertone was worse than banana boat but I’d wanna retest before I recommend any of them though. My memory isn’t that good, I just remember relief that Neutrogena was good because it’s what I’ve been using.
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mq8c3YB this is the one I have, although I bought it when it was 50 bucks and a quick glance shows most over 100 now.

19·16 days agoIf you’ve ever used a UV camera it’s pretty clear that much like lotion not absorbing after a certain point, there’s a limit to how dark your skin gets with a given sunscreen. Also that there’s a massive difference between brands and formulas. I had some photos I took with one but can’t find them. If I do later I’ll update.
Searched but couldn’t find them. Did find a conversation though where I used it to show most cars in a parking lot have UV blocking windshields but every other window is transparent unless they have tint

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How come soccer and tennis never caught on in the states? Also why hasn't there been an NFL team vs a Soccer Team and vice versa. Just to prove which is the better sport? Details inside.
1·22 days agoI agree. Also pitting pros from one sport against pros of another sport is gonna result in the fish out of water scoring 0. Rugby and American football might be the closest in overlapping skills, but the pros are pros because they’re pros. You don’t novice your way into success just by being fit.

Nah, Hitler had the popular mandate. He’s more akin to Bibi or Ben Gavir. These people are far worse than Trump
I would say a dead hitler might be preferable tho. Trump surely ain’t too far off

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Considering what can be seen with Mythos 5 and Fable 5, what would happen when any "too smart" LLM get released?
1·26 days agoThe real issue isn’t the intelligence of mythos 5, it is that they’re no longer part of the allowed unregulated AI vendors because they made the administration upsetty spaghetti. There is zero chance if Chatgpt had similar levels of security analysis and exploitation capabilities that there would be a roadblock in place. Especially if they took the path Anthropic did by including OS vendors, large hardware producers, and governments in the rollout.

From what I recall there were multiple fairly popular prophecies about what a diety or sign from the heavens were supposed to look like and Jesus recreated a number of them in the form of miracles. Doesn’t really speak to his mental status, he coulda been delusional in his insistance of his diety status or he could have been a grifter, or it could all be legit or whatever.
