There are places that are snowy most of the time and everything works just fine. It really isnt that bad if you are prepared and have appropriate infrastructure.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve sends annual chocolates to Steam devs who earn roughly $800,000English
57·4 months agoThe main issue with american chocolates is that they taste like vomit because americans have associated that with chocolate. So american chocolate manufacturers add butyric acid in their chocolate so it can have that lovely characteristic taste. Butyric acid extends the shelf life of chocolate.
The rest of the world isnt a big fan of vomit for some reason.
In greek, bird is slang for penis(πουλί).

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Posting for the "Now guys he was MURDERED! Don't celebrate!" Crowd
72·8 months agoThe more we normalize assassinations, the worse the world becomes. America is slightly more fucked today, not because this guy died, but because extrajudicial assassinations are not cool. This only accelerates the collapse of american society and rule of law.
Some tankies/accelerationists want this, but they are mostly clueless kids.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If You Have Choice then Which part would you choose to be born in?
3·9 months agoCambodia isnt great either. With B, you can always move to a decent part of Mexico.
They did this in Sweden too. Then people stopped buying energy drinks, because most people self checkout and you had to wait for an employee to come check that you are an adult. And swedes being swedes, they would rather die than go through that.
Now they have a permanent employee checking from afar with a tablet, approving people without any intervention or interruption. I wouldnt be surprised if the energy drink brands partially pay for them.

17·11 months agoHomer’s Odyssey, literally the thing that defined epics and the oldest surviving literature, has a scene, where Odysseus finally manages to return to his home and see his dog.
I wont spoil it, because a movie is coming out. But then again, you had 3000 years to read it, if you still havent read it, do you even care?

Games@lemmy.world•Gachapwned: How gacha MMOs drown us in progression and randomness | Massively OverpoweredEnglish
41·11 months agoStar Rail isnt an mmo. And while it has many “progression mechanics”, they are slowly introduced to the player. And once you understand them, you dont really need to think that much about them. It is basically an anime+idle game.
You watch your anime episode every now and then and you afk farm daily for a couple mins(so that your characters slowly become stronger). You dont need to think loads of time to understand them but i guess it depends on what you mean by loads of times. Maybe i have played many games(mobile and conventional), so i dont have any issues with the systems.
If you want to build a character, you can choose them and the game will highlight their ideal “gear” and “stats”, though those recommendations arent always perfect. If you want to tryhard, you can use this site
https://www.prydwen.gg/star-rail/tier-list/
And see what gear and stats are ideal for your character. Or just use your brain. Most dps like crit damage/rate, attack and speed. Most supports really love speed. Or watch a guoba video about the character you want to gear. Ultimately, if you afk grind gear, it doesnt take a giant brain to understand that the dps set, wants dps stats, or that the break set wants break damage stats.

Games@lemmy.world•'No gay, no pay': The RuneScape community is absolutely mauling Jagex's new CEO over his decision to cancel new Pride Month eventsEnglish
1342·11 months agoI used to believe that too, because it was pointless. But it seems that i was wrong. The fact that it was pointless, means that the corporations felt comfortable with using and abusing that to maximize profit. The fact that they are afraid to do that, indicates how fucked things are now.
So i am ok with corporations using movements for marketing reasons, because ultimately this is the canary in the mine. If the corporations consider it a brand risk, then society is moving towards the wrong direction.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL the country that eats the most pizza per capita is Norway.English
4·1 year agoNoone identifies as rich, because as you become richer, your social circle also becomes richer. So you never really feel rich, because there are other people who are, significantly, richer than you.
If you dont worry about food, shelter and healthcare then you are rich(or at least “middle class”), ie free to do whatever the fuck you want with no risk or fear. You can have very low personal net worth but if your family(and/or society) has your back, no matter what, then you are not poor.
And since Norway has one of the highest home ownership rates, among non shitty countries, then even from a networth point of view, most norwegians probably have 500k+ € networth. Most countries with high home ownership are poor countries, where houses are cheap and shitty(people are migrating out of the country, so a lot of houses are available). Or countries like China and Singapore, where housing is a major priority for the government.
And in before “communism”, Singapore is one of the most capitalistic countries on the planet. But providing housing is a big part of their social contract and how the dictatorship has managed to maintain control over the country for over half a century with minimum opposition. And tbh, the chinese government is similar. Authoritarian but provides economic prosperity/housing in order to keep society stable. Also communist mostly in name but actually capitalistic.

5·1 year agoIs it because they are rich and dont want to cook?
A lot of turks living in Germany are(or descended from) poor, uneducated, turkish farmers who were imported to Germany many decades ago, as cheap labour, when Germany needed workers.
Not all immigrants(turkish or otherwise) are like that.

631·1 year agoThe american obsession with melanin levels is insane. Why cant they be normal and be racist to people who live over the next hill, like us enlightened europeans.

You can do things for free or cheap but some things have so long waiting times, that you opt for private doctors, which can be somewhat cheap, at least in comparison with the US and because there is “competition” with the public system.
