What technical limitations do you see? I feel like other than multireddits this place is basically equal to reddit.

Ya I just got to reddit for specific video game ones now basically. Or specific TV shows.
There’s porn on here. Lemmynsfw.com is actually the second most populous instance irrc (or top 3?). Just got to convince people to post to it. But then we got the same problem of trying to convince people to do that lol.
The infrastructure bill and Lina Khan are the only things I’ve noticed. I think someone I know got a Pell Grant and was helped by that possibly? But ya, too many of these things are so mean-tested and you have to jump through hoops to get them that so many people don’t benefit that people end up not caring. It’s the equivalent of saying you got so many a band-aid for multiple stab wounds. Ya I guess it’s better than nothing but it’s not going to stop the bleeding and it’s definitely not good enough for the problems the country is facing and how people feel about it. The Democrats just blame the Republicans for being awful, and they are, but they also have an extremely limited imagination in what they promise and give. It ends up leading to the ratchet effect. The Republicans turn us right, and the Democrats only reverse a few things, so we end up more right than before. This trend isn’t sustainable and this combination is why we’re turning fascist today.
I believe it. Coming in blind having never having seen the original probably helped a lot.
Good idea. I haven’t used my local library in awhile, but I’m worried about library funding with Trump. It’s why this is the first time in a long time I looked into a book from the library. I’m using any excuse to like you said, argue their services are being actively used. It’s good to hear it confirmed that it does actually help librarians and that they’re encouraging that.
Going to give an old example and a new example.
I remember liking the Aeon Flux movie. Don’t remember too much about it, but I remember enjoying it, and favorably comparing it to Ultraviolet which came out around the same time. Recently I heard someone bring it up in a podcast as a terrible movie and it turns out it’s pretty universally panned lol.
A more recent example is The Watchers. I thought it was pretty good and kept my interest the whole time, but seems pretty middling from reviews. A lot of people especially didn’t like the ending, which I guess was kind of sudden, but still alright imo. Not noteworthy in being especially bad or anything.
I thought it did some cool stuff with making the Facehuggers scary again and the
Hybrid alien was cool. Although apparently that was a reference to an alien movie I haven’t seen yet or something?
Anyway, I really liked it as well.
I really liked that movie. Great example for me, too.
Because she’s party of the administration in power and people aren’t happy right now, so they blame whoever is in power even if it’s not quite their fault. They don’t care that the rate of inflation slowed to basically normal, they care that things are still expensive because their wages haven’t risen to match the raised inflation and their savings are lower. It used to be easier for incumbents, but as the conditions in the US continue to degrade from late stage capitalism and 60 years of neoliberal policies, I have a feeling it will continue to be the opposite.
Holding the line won’t work with people getting poorer every year (and if your wage doesn’t match inflation or the rising costs of housing or transportation, that’s what happening, you’re getting poorer).
I’ve been seeing suggestions for that book a lot. I was even going to see if I can grab it from my local library, but it’s just an e-book for some reason. I guess I can read it on my tablet but i prefer physical books. I do want to support my library though by using them, so it’s a tough choice lol.
Nooooo, can’t have that. Then you guys might pick the wrong candidate, you see?
Haha that’s one way. Seems like it would make it harder to land the next job, though.
I so need to do this. Been at the same job for almost 10 years and it feels like everyone else I started with has surpassed me for this reason in terms of salary and position. But i hate applying for jobs in tech so much, having to do the leetcode study bullshit as if I’m still in school and all that. It’s so exhausting and annoying. Maybe it’s the ADHD, but it’s hard to bring myself to sit down and do it.
But also, I could really use more money, it’s been impossible to save for a house where I live, and I’d love to be able to have one someday. I know it’s not too late, I still have so many years before I retire, but I’m still jealous of you guys that could sit down and more easily do the interview dance every 2-3 years.

True. There’s some good advice in this thread for features people might not be familiar with.
I think it would just be cool to have regional specific communities and a shared culture. For example, one thing about Reddit was that there was subreddits for some local neighborhoods and such. I was able to help a couple move in return for a bunch stuff for my new apartment through that, and get advice on where I was moving to, etc. Just cool local things like that would be nice to have on here, but it would probably require a bigger population.
I wouldn’t mind the some more regional US instances, like midwest.social,.but for socal or norcal or the west coast in general, northeast, south, etc.
That might be why the candidates are running, but it’s not why people are voting for them. You haven’t seemed to have applied any empathy or gone into the mind of a third party voter at all, especially in this election, which is a different situation because of the ongoing genocide.
Mmmm… Look at that satisfying gif
