Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•If you could add one book to the required reading curriculum for people under 18, what would it be?
2·4 days ago“Martin Fierro” by Jose Hernandez. Me and all my classmates thought it would be the most boring book. We were surprised. And it was full of teachings for soon-to-be adults.
A sailor once told me the anchor tattoo represented their will to end up in the bottom of the sea if he ever drowned or their ship sinked. This was because, as he put it, the other option would be having their family members see his body in terrible shape.
This person tended to tell exagerated stories, but still… I was young and believed it ever since. Can any other people confirm they heard the same? I would like to know :)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When/how frequently do you replace your phone with a new one?
2·4 days agoOn average every 5 years. The battery life is always the issue. I will get a fairphone next time…

People Twitter@sh.itjust.works•We all watched ICE walk up to her window, pulled out his gun and shot her point blank in the face
2·4 days agoPrecisely! One has to look also for the wheels. She was turning away off him. Also, if he really felt threatened he would have first move to the side, not concerning himself with shooting. Everyone knows a bullet won’t stop a car. And, secondly, to stop the car you would aim to the wheels probably but no officer did it… They were all concerned with terroricing the population and that’s the reason behind this MURDER. Fuck nazis and pedophiles’ apologists.
F*ck those nazi apologists. Instead of framework rather get a linux laptop e.g. starlabs. Oh, repairability… Yeah, it hurts me too.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•My mom says that people who don't have "value" don't deserve to live and that "depression" is just an excuse for laziness. What's is your rebuttal for it?
1·16 days agoShe’s giving you the most difficult life lesson. I am almost 40 and to this day I dread to ‘actively hear’ many words my dad has to say about me or my decisions. It’s a difficult lesson because they are our caregivers and as such they did many good deeds. But at some point we need to put our own mental health above anyone else’s rant, rage, or toxicity. We don’t owe them shit. After that leap, you may be able to come back to the issue that they were addressing with their comments and reflect upon the issue itself on your own and/ or with the help of others (friends, therapist, chatgpt?? I wouldn’t recommend the latter but it may be a good starting point and better than nothing…)

Technology@lemmy.world•Israel’s IDF Bans Android Phones—iPhones Now ‘Mandatory’English
92·1 month agoThis can mean anything, it’s possible they wanted just 1 platform so that their expertise is focused. And android being a little more open may have been seen (biased) as a disadvantage (i.e. enemies are more prone to find a vulnerability). We can argue with it. It’s like the counterpart of people thinking that open source is per default more safe because of being open source… It’s a correlation that can’t prove anything…

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL Iran Has No Water Left, 28 Million People WITHOUT WaterEnglish
31·2 months agoAnd I wouldn’t say the use here is just a swearword. Saying Iran is under a fascist regime should unite us to identify a problem, the suffering of their population. Do not allow semantics to be one another reason why we are fighting among us, the people with radical decency.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL Iran Has No Water Left, 28 Million People WITHOUT WaterEnglish
23·2 months agoSince when are we getting so heated debates about fascism? Trump has ICE, and no one discussed if he wasn’t facist before that. Learn to see the cues. Elimination of competing political rivals is just one aspect.
Plus, if we were to look for a definition, might as well take one that accounts for understanding that facist regimes are, beyond all, a process. See for example the text by George Orwell: ‘What is Fascism?’ (1944)
By ‘Fascism’ they mean, roughly speaking, something cruel, unscrupulous, arrogant, obscurantist, anti-liberal and anti-working-class. Except for the relatively small number of Fascist sympathizers, almost any English person would accept ‘bully’ as a synonym for ‘Fascist’. That is about as near to a definition as this much-abused word has come.
But Fascism is also a political and economic system. Why, then, cannot we have a clear and generally accepted definition of it? Alas! we shall not get one — not yet, anyway. To say why would take too long, but basically it is because it is impossible to define Fascism satisfactorily without making admissions which neither the Fascists themselves, nor the Conservatives, nor Socialists of any colour, are willing to make. All one can do for the moment is to use the word with a certain amount of circumspection and not, as is usually done, degrade it to the level of a swearword.
This. I have started to wonder if yawns are actually a way to wake up. We know little about them. Some brain scans showed that we refresh the blood around our brain, like changing the water in a fish bowl.
Not everyone will get wary if you don’t yawn. Same way as not everyone thinks the same way about yawns, or just over analyze what others do.
But good for you to try mixin and minglin with the neurotypical crowd :)
Just keep it relaxed
Are you saying that any other instances are tolerant with Nazis/ Facism? Do any of these other instances host Nazi/ Facist communities too? If you were able to elaborate, I’m certain many people would be interested into knowing which communities or instances to de-federate (e.g. like many admins already did to hexbear).
PS. I can’t find it now, but there was a website like https://lemmyverse.net/ that showed the top instances that were defederated from the rest, and some “4chan-like” scene was around… if anyone remember which website I am talking about and could share, it would be great too. Thanks

This. (Offline too.)
Which generation did we really taught critical thinking to? In general, those “thinkers” or people with nice research skills (e.g. reading comprehension and other traits) were always a minority within each generation. And I agree there will be less now with AI. But we have no polls or measurement, so the title goes a little clickbaity, in resonance to the generalized discomfort towards a new technology that schools haven’t accomodated yet (e.g. all kind of solutions are seen in the wild)
I reckon it was the same with arithmetislcs and calculators in the past. We were able to deal with that! (so that whatever proportion of people that graduates knowing arithmetics with each generation didn’t shrink “too much”.)
If we are considering possible scenarios, let’s be optimistic too.
AI (discounting other problems like their ecological footprint) may not be that bad on our educational systems once we adjust…
