I’m tired of seeing this nonsensical argument too often on Lemmy so here it goes:

Ofc. I love some things about Kanye, the things that make his music just straight bops and his lyrics so fun and ridiculous at times, and I hate other things that are not related to his art. I know his weird anti-“Semitic” (Polish/Ukrainian people are not Semites but Anglo/Western cultures find any reason to hate other people, lol) rants are off-putting at the very least but I don’t know what that part of him has to do with “Flashing Lights” or “Guilt Trip”, they’re completely unrelated.

Now, when the art is a reflection/in praise of the artists’ ideology and takes, and those are morally and/or intellectually fucked, and you liked them, then that certainly says something negative about you. You can love or hate that one painting by Hitler and it would say nothing about you, but if you enjoy Mein Kampf you’re an immoral dummy, certainly.

  • Respectfully, idk what’s so “dark” about understanding that we have a responsibility to this world, and that that responsibility starts by being responsible for ourselves (our thoughts and actions), and that can only take place with at least a modicum of self-knowledge. That’s just the right way to see the world if you don’t want your existence to be, by default or on purpose, a net negative in this world. Because if it is, you either change yourself or end yourself, and that’s the responsible thing to do. The biggest problems in this world come from those who deny this responsibility and self-centeredly, sociopathically live only to please themselves, regardless of who suffers from it!

Your view isn’t “dark”, it’s just mature. Of course, depending on your culture, this could be rare, and the societal repercussions of it will be obvious. Or it could always be in the back of your mind, pushing you to be better and to repent for your momentary lack of virtue, as it is in cultures who believe in God and His judgement, for instance. And if this knowledge brings pain, it is because “in much knowledge there’s much sorrow” and “ignorance is bliss”… but we’re human beings, not beasts, and we have the capacity and responsibility to know enough to act right and make the world a better place to whatever degree we can.

  • But being a bandit is not right, I doubt your parents were elevating being an immoral thief, for example. That just sounds like a descriptive sentence, not a prescriptive one. And of course we all have the capacity for selfish evil, some societies have it as their main value/MO. Chinese people, from my experience in the world and with many Chinese immigrants, are very prosocial, family oriented, collectivist and avoid violence. Literally never have I ever seen or heard of anyone get harassed or violently mistreated by Chinese immigrants either in my own country or the ones I’ve lived in. 🤷

I’m not, it’s just not something you understand. I meant Abrahamic monotheism, but that’s just because that’s the most complete uhh “understanding”. It’s not vague, it’s slightly debatable but it’s not open ended, and if we sat down and thought about God even without this Abrahamic background I’m sure we’d reach the same conclusions (unless we’re sociopaths trying to make excuses for ourselves). 🤷
