That is a fundamental difference, the Universe repository is community maintained outside of the Pro service. It always was before Pro too. I don’t think Fedora has a separate repo for community-maintained packages. I still don’t see the issue with offering something above and beyond what you traditionally have and charging a fee for it. They could just have easily never provided official support for Universe.

Wrong. They merely stop supporting it when a new version is released, just like everyone else. You can skip Pro and get the same experience you get with any other distro.
They’re giving you 10 years of updates on those packages for free? I know Alma is from Tux Care but that extended support comes at a price as well. Leap is two years. LMDE support ends soon after the newest version. Fedora gets 13 months after the newest version I believe. Maybe I’m wrong on some of those but none of those come close to the free support canonical provides on LTS or Pro.
Right, but if you’re after the level of “stability” that Canonical is offering, where are you getting it for free? Maybe there is another place but none that I’m aware of. I think it is perfectly fine for them to charge for that, especially if enterprise customers are the target audience and those who aren’t don’t have to pay for it.
They also don’t provide those updates. I am a Fedora guy by the way. I’m not defending Canonical, just pointing out that this is a silly reason to dislike them.
They are security updates that were never available otherwise. They didn’t take something that was freely available and put it behind a paywall. It was a new service.
The updates available through Ubuntu Pro wouldn’t have normally been available prior to Pro. It’s an added service, not something that was previously available that is now locked behind a paywall. There are plenty of reasons to not like Canonical but this isn’t one.
The laws can be written to reference the approximate age. Antoine who will be 18 by December 31st of that year could be considered 18 for the purposes of the law.

I’m not an expert but I do not believe GPS transmits much data by itself. It would be what your service provider, apps, websites do with that GPS derived location data.
That is intentional. It provides a reasonable approximation of age while maintaining privacy. The big gaping hole someone pointed out to me is who gets to determine what is blocked? I don’t have a great answer for that. I imagine it would be the type of thing settled in courts. Personally, my biggest concerns are social media and access to AI. I think those two things are more harmful to the development of young minds and their mental wellbeing than anything NSFW.
I did. My router runs a version of OpenWRT and while I can blacklist certain domains, I can’t add lists of domains. They have to be added one by one. The pi-hole solution is much easier. I can add an entire list for social media. I can add a list that forces search engines to use safe search.

As a parent, I wish someone would develop a cross platform, open source, parental control tool that preserves privacy while allowing for strong controls that are simple to use. The best I could come up with is a separate instance of Pihole that any device my kids use is linked to. It would be nice if there was a software option or something implemented in hardware that allowed parents to register the device with the user’s age (no identifying info). Laws could then be passed forcing certain websites and apps to reject any users under a certain age. The restrictions could automatically lift when the user reaches a predetermined age. I’m not an expert so there are probably aspects of this I haven’t thought through but it seems better than what has been implemented so far.
Why does this post feel like spam? I don’t personally trust Telegram (which is not fully open source) and chose Immich. It works cross platform and my whole family can use it. It’s self hosted so I don’t have to worry about whatever shenanigans someone is up to on some remote server.
