Worshiping any nation is dumb—especially both the US & China. If not captalism then communism cuts out all other political ideologies; either/oring is fallacious & too simplistic.

Technology@lemmy.world•US state laws push age checks into the operating systemEnglish
2·18 days agoFunny as search doesn’t work on MS GitHub without auth. If you post your library on a language’s forum, a personal blog post, & some other place, the search engines (or ugh LLMs with Exa search) can find the. There are decentralized forge options like Radicle, or at least a nonprofit-owned. But all snapshot-based VCSs will have the limitation of needing some centralized source of truth in most cases since the model makes a conflict out of patches being pulled in out of order (which the patch theory-based stuff covers).
But we can all still watch the wording aspect so folks feel free to not do dumb things like assume code = Git = MS GitHub.

Technology@lemmy.world•US state laws push age checks into the operating systemEnglish
3·19 days agoYou gotta stop equating Microslop-owned GitHub with code forges/repositories. The first step is change language to be inclusive to other platfrom while not specially mentioning the proprietary, megacorporate option—such as saint code forge or VCS host. The second step is to create an account elsewhere as you primary spot. Our framing of these things matter, & if you don’t like the state imposing its will on you, the corporate option here is more or less an extension of the state (contributors in Yemen for example will be blocked under US sanctions, bug reporters will be required to agree to the ToS & data collection machine of Microsoft, if the capitalist class doesn’t like your project they will have it removed like Yuzu & yt-download while they will allow state-sponsor gangs like ICE to remain on the platform). Break out of “the network effect”.

2·26 days agoMicrosoft made Sponsors so they can siphon a portion of the payment fees. There is no reason to make Codeberg add that sort of bloat when you can add a hyperlink to the README.* or in a section of your application to a third-party service that hopefully can be as focused on doing one thing as Codeberg largely has (non-profit hosted Forgejo).

2·26 days agoWhy stop there? Git’s UX on the command line is awful, so adopt a better tool & your hosting will automatically be somewhere better.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Every Terminal program should have a black background by default
51·26 days agoAnd make it #000 pure black if you do… I have written about why
I mean when they adopted MS GitHub & Discord as their only modes of community & contribution, you can know any “open source” project is built on sand
I would 'free but folks need to learn some Nix basics before the jump in headlong into bad community recommendations like starting with flakes. It’s hard to just drop into Nix without some commitment.
KDL is the future. It reads nice & is compatible with both JSON & XML

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What will it take to grow open source Lemmy, ActivityPub, ATProtocol, & other platforms/apps/websites?
2·1 year agoYou could make a better UX on ActivityPub without inventing a new, incompatible protocol that has a centralization problem. Email is decentralized just fine. They could have also made proposals to ActivityPub or extending it like most applications do. It is just venture capital bullshit cloning Tvitter which makes it more familiar rather than an objectively easier UX.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•Liberux NEXX Is a New (Still in Development) Linux Phone
4·1 year agoYeah. It’s thoroughly documented tho & nothing seems over-the-top. They also contribute to upstreams. A lot of folks use GitLab despite it only being open core. Every day I have to interact with Microsoft GitHub which is fully proprietary & they do nothing but inject social media nonsense to the platform & train on your data just to sell it back to you. Yet rarely does anyone complain about them being it the middle of free software, & instead they move all comms to the black hole of Discord. Meanwhile Google is no longer doing Android in the open.
I don’t think what Jolla is doing is evil—you just have to play by stupid capitalist rules to be a ‘viable business’ in this economy to keep the lights on. They used to have more stuff open IIRC, but it can be hard to do in practice if you are picking a niche taking on a duopoly.

61·1 year ago- Gmail -> Posteo
- Chrome -> LibreWolf
- Photos -> rsync (I don’t trust Discord-only communites)
- Drive -> rsync / VCSs
- WhatsApp -> XMPP
- Keep -> What?

- Google Translate -> Yandex Translate (FOSS options do not generally support Eastern languages)

No disagreement, but there is implications & framing towards China’s model all over this thread.
