Man, if it was that simple, ALARM wouldn’t exist and arch would have (at least) allowed aarch64 packages in the AUR years ago.

Arch’s policy is to offer only x64 binaries. They don’t offer ARM packages because they don’t want to. ALARM exists because Arch does not want the contributions.

While it’s not zero work, your claim of reinventing the wheel overstates what compiling software that’s already compatible with ARM requires.

I’m reading what Collabora wrote and nowhere is that blog post did they state that compiling stuff for ARM and the packaging are the hard parts. They explicitly called out the reproducibility parts, not the rest.

If your small community project with dead forums and broken logs (see below) can do it, a team of full time Linux engineers can do it in a relatively small amount of time, probably with logs.

Package repositories, recipes, and support paths

The existing stuff needs to be adapted, not reinvented. In my time as packaging some software for my own use under openSUSE I barely seen software that needed adaptions in the package spec file for other CPU architectures. Emulators were the most common exceptions I encountered and even that changed a lot since then thanks to upstreams porting those to Android and Apple M processors. Collabora lists as main challenges the ability to access the upstream source codes for reproducibility, not “repositories, recipes, and support paths”.

Google is no longer supporting new Pixel phones in AOSP. The days of custom ROMs just working on Pixels is over. Consider getting Fairphone if custom ROMs are a must have for you.

It’s a misleading headline. They aren’t installing the app on your phone. They’ll preinstall it on phones in the factory before they’re sold.

What’s there to reinvent? Upstream Linux software already builds for ARM.

the S27 Ultra/Pro next year sounds like it’s shaping up to be a far more interesting device compared to any of the phones they released in the last few years.

After reading this I googled it and what I read didn’t sound super exciting. Just the regular spec bump and I’m skeptical of the reported RAM increase. Wouldn’t be surprised if they cut RAM like everybody else. So unless you want a Ultra level model in a base level enclosure, I don’t see what the “far more interesting device” is.

I could get somewhat excited if someone made a Xperia Play type phone with a full FEX-enabled Steam client.

AI isn’t a tool, it’s an umbrella term applied to countless individual tools. Just a couple of years ago automated language translation wasn’t AI. Now it is for whatever reason.

I like mine. Can’t speak how much changed in recent generations because it’s my first new phone in 4 years. Other than deleting Chrome and switching browsers to Iceraven and the launcher to Lawnchair as well as the keyboard to Gboard, I don’t think I customized much. Slight tweaks here and there but for the most part I was pretty content with the defaults which is rare for me. In the past I may have been shocked by crap on new phones I needed to get rid of but I actually think most Samsung modifications to Android are pretty good and I often prefer the Samsung feature to whatever the Google counterpart is.

I use that sidebar they have a lot. That AI Select thing is great and I set all Galaxy AI stuff to be on device. The only thing I dislike about AI Select is that a recognized song can only be played through Spotify which I don’t use.

I cannot speak for the entire range of devices out there but if a line of products is unobtrusively good for a long time, it surely retents its user base.

These different markets are served by the same “Xbox” branded gaming division at Microsoft, though. When she talks about Xbox reaching a billion users, she means all gaming output by Microsoft.

“Xbox” is the umbrella term for everything gaming at Microsoft, including Candy Crush and Minecraft on mobile.

Steam is peanuts compared to phone games. Candy Crush Saga has over a billion downloads on Android alone where it’s the #3 top grossing casual game. On Apple it’s still the #21 puzzle game.

I know that a billion overall downloads is different from a billion daily users. This is just to put it into perspective that Steam is not the benchmark when it comes to the overall number of gamers out there. Mobile is.
