  • This is quite common actually. Not sure why you think it’s weird. It could literally be the “Fuck” in the title that age restricts it. This is why Youtube creators have been bleeping out every possible curseword for years now. Third party clients wouldn’t be able to bypass the age check either. You need an adult account to get access to the video stream data.

But if you’re just venting, yeah, it’s awful. But it’s also kind of normal that an age check is an actual age check. If only the reasons for limiting by age were less restrictive. Keep in mind though that Youtube is strict because it makes it easy on a global scale.

If we’re talking about the darknet under Tor and the likes, bandwidth and page speed becomes an important factor. Using frameworks automatically makes the website slower and stuff like javascript is almost always disabled. There’s also opsec one should be doing even on their code. Re-using code you have written for opensource projects or clearnet websites might get linked back to you.

    tl;dr, it’s more of a technical limitation

  • A big problem in the whole third party extension world (for browsers and apps like these) is that the creators of these extensions are often swayed to sell their creation. Dropping an infostealer to 1000 people could easily get you 10s of thousands of dollars if you use the stolen info for stuff like bank fraud. So invest a few thousand of that to buy the extension and you get a profit. You can even get access to the accounts of extension creators by getting them infected by other extensions. This can even be automated in the form of a worm such as the NPM malware named Shai-Hulud.

It’s an extremely dirty battle that requires every developer to be vigilant about who they trust and to defend their creation at all costs. Easy money always has a bad side, and I hope every developer understands that their users have put a trust into them that the developer has most likely also put into other developers.
