You should use Void. Compile only the obscure stuff that is not in repo… or the proprietery stuff, but that’s just repacking, so it takes minutes at worst.
Yeah, that’s not an eternity, but then I just have a working desktop, that’s it. What about browsers, chat apps, IT apps I mught need (Remmina in particular), word processors, text editors, setting up things the way I’m used to, daemons…
And of course, setting up the DE, that takes time as well.
Nah, thanks, way past that stage I’m afraid. I have done it, and there were “yeiiii ☺️” moments, but this was long ago, I was in my early 20s. Now I’m in my late 30s and have a family, things are different 😂. I’d rather spend that time with my son, doing things he likes, than me compiling stuff that’s already been compiled 1000 times over by someone else.
I had an update take 3 and half hours on a 2019 laptop with a ryzen 5 3550h, 16gb of ddr4 ram and an nvme ssd.
So I moves to gentoo where if unlucky and qtwebengine needs to comiplie the update takes 5+ hours. 😌

I love gentoo and the process of compilation tho. The power of use flags is amazing once you learn how to use them.
I know, but it just takes way too much time. Don’t have time for that currently.
overnight compile.
That is an option, and I have thought about that, but building my system would take an eternity that way. I just need a working system man 🤷.
For me it took 20 mins to get a bootable system and another 30 mins to get xorg and xmonad on it.
But eternity can mean diff to other people.
