Google DeepMind will open an artificial intelligence campus in Seoul, South Korea, the first facility of its kind in the world for the company, after Demis Hassabis met South Korean President Lee Jae Myung at Cheong Wa Dae on Monday. Kim Yong-beom, the presidential chief of staff for policy, confirmed the agreement.

Not mentioned in the article but Gemini is obviously developed by the DeepMind teams, among many other things.

True, but the institution here is more about the scientific uses of AI.

The Ministry of Science and ICT framed it as a key element of Korea’s “K-Moonshot” project, which brings together AI and science capabilities to address major national challenges.

They specifically reference AlphaFold as an example of the kinds of advancements that they’re aiming at. The DeepMind team is involved in most of Google’s AI projects as they’re the leading researchers on the topic.

I meant that this isn’t a school opening to push the technologies responsible for the current AI/LLM/ChatBot bubble that is causing all of the negative societal effects. This is more of an advanced Machine Learning (including neural networks and Transformer chased models) institute than a Chatbot/gen AI factory.

Too many people conflate the two things so the real science portion of machine learning is catching strays from the fight against the capitalist orgy around generative AI/chatbots.

It’s important to acknowledge the difference.
