Making up ridiculous lyrics has gotten me through retail work. Hearing the same songs multiple times a day gets old real quick, but funny words make it easier to tolerate.

One set of alternative lyrics that my brain can’t let go of goes to Miley Cyrus’s “The Climb.”

There’s always gonna be another cow there
I’m always gonna wanna make it moo
Always gonna be a field of cattle
Sometimes it’s what I’ve got to do

There’s something magical about the word “squirrel” (pronounced as one syllable, skwerl, for those who live in a region where it’s pronounced with two syllables and never heard it that way before). For example:

Everybody wants to rule the squirrel

    You’re my brown-eyed squirrel

This is the squirrel we live in (whoa-oh-oh)
And these are the nuts we’re given

    Squirrels on film
    Squirrels on film

Don’t give me no hand me down shrews
Don’t give me no hand me down chinchilla
Don’t give me no hand me down squirrel
    I’ve got one already

    Blind squirrel
      (Blind squirrel)
        (Blind squirrel)
Talkin bout blind squirrel (Blind squirrel!)

Do it enough and it starts happening automatically. Music will never be the same.

    No need to thank me.
