If you actually want to support artists, don’t. YouTube Music’s royalty payout is far from stable and transparent, not to mention low to others which is already hard to beat really. Tidal comes closest (from what I found to having functionality and paying artists a more fair rate. Qobuz is there too, Deezer pioneers detecting AI garbage that people think makes them artists now. Spotify got most features ofc but they’re unethical as shit

I’ve thought of mass scraping youtube for music, but it’s not worth ths risk of being banned by Google for life.
Newpipe (and all the other ad blockers) are playing cat and mouse with them. They make some changes which screw up blockers, blockers patch and return to service pretty quickly. I couple months ago they went so far as to force javascript proof of work, I was able to setup yt-dlp with the javascript engine in like 5 minutes and keep going.
They target different things, sometimes the try to block high quality streams, sometimes it’s not logged in streams, sometimes it’s streams from certain ips. They keep moving the cheese, deleting this rss feed or that stream type. At some point, they’ll implement actual encryption like widevine and make it actually difficult to get at the streams, at which point, we’ll just screen record, commercial skip and the best of the best will end up in torrents.

afaik you can’t screen record DRM content, it’s encrypted all the way to the TV or monitor. The OS never sees a decrypted stream. This is why if you try to screenshot Netflix the window just appears as a black frame.

I’m sure in the future they’ll have a firmware update system for rotating their keys if they’ve been leaked. And if you try to keep your TV offline to prevent the key rotation, they’ll still rotate the encryption key for the stream (maybe wait a year for most people to receive the firmware update), and your offline TV won’t be able to decode the stream anymore

I would also recommend Sponsorblock because most Youtube sponsorships are overpriced garbage or complete scams. It honestly seems too good to be true but it‘s open source and apparently can cover operational costs on just donations. What I really like about Sponsorblock is how you can curate your experience to a T. It lets you skip all sort of content that you may not like such as self-promotions, credits, previews/flashbacks, intros, and more. It comes really close to the internet highways concept I have long only dreamed about where you‘re served exactly what you want and you don‘t need a silly AI agent to do any of it.

I generally use YouTube without logging in on the PC and clean history every now and then. No matter which videos I watch first, the feed gets populated with such amount of garbage, that it kinda surprises me. Softcore porn, cop and gun shit, shitty political stuff, it’s flabbergasting.
That’s unfortunately what the algorithm gives when it doesn’t know very much about you: bottom of the barrel slop. I’m the opposite and stay logged in, but I’m also diligent about removing items from my watchlist if I didn’t like them, or if I see they’re skewing the algorithm.

Gonna catch a lot of “get with the times” but an ad blocker and watching YouTube in browser on my phone - I’ve never seen the value of needing Premium to do adblocking or a whole ass app like Vanced. Maybe sponsorblock for more but like overall, my impression has always been YouTube Premium is a joke of a service that can never offer anything more than adblocking/sponsor block already just does from a browser on my phone.
This is why they’re trying to lock down everything. Nerfing ad blockers in chrome, semi-banning all unapproved apps in Android.
And don’t get me started on smart TVs. They were broken right out of the gate.
In addition to removing ads in YouTube, it also gives ad-free YouTube Music (which fucking sucks because it always plays the video version of the audio). But honestly, the biggest problem is the app itself shoving shorts down your throat and lacking a bunch of features that third-party clients have. And even if you pay to remove ads from YouTube, you can’t pay to remove ads from the videos themselves. You can only do that with sponsorblock, which YouTube could totally just adopt if they wanted but as is, you have to use third part apps anyway.

I disabled them in settings a couple of years ago and have not had issues since.
That switch does not work. It turns off the videos but still plays the video versions, which is even worse. I’m not sure it even knows the difference.
Who in their right mind actually pays for YouTube?
- I have kids and having them subjected to ads is a burden on them AND on me. I don’t get begged for the latest toys, or have to watch the latest ad for whatever cream will solve my latest rash…
- I don’t mind supporting channels that I watch. I also pay for PBS as I want to support that type of programming.
- I spend enough time supporting all the IT needs and maintaining my existing household’s IT infrastructure for players for all of the content that I download for my spouse and kids that isn’t available on YT or PBS.
Adnauseam/ublock/smarttube are your friends
It was at one point a perfectly good deal. Google Play Music was an awesome app and it came with ad-free YouTube for free. The family plan lets you share with 5 family members and was a great deal. Everybody is paying for some kind of music streaming service of some kind or another.

Count me out. I’m building a music library of my own with the help of my local library, thrift stores, and the internet. And, shit, I just got a record player, too.
Oh I have my own selfhosted music library as well. But that doesn’t really solve the problem of music discoverability. Back in the day we had radio and MTV. These days streaming services are still a must on some level unless you’re content to just listen to the music you already have forever.
I use listen brainz for music discovery. Every week it generates a jams playlist(similar to things i am known to like) and an exploration playlist(a bit more out there in terms of music taste). I then download those via the API and convert them to a CSV which gets put into SLSK download and all the music shows up in my music player automatically and I delete the songs if I dont like em. I was able to import my spotify listening history into it so I have a few 100k listens and its got a good idea of what I like.
Either my kids ask for something new, or i hit billboard charts once in a while and true up my collection.
I like to use the time filter and can listen in 5 languages; “oldies” in various genres, times, and places, isn’t that hard to research–plenty of free internet radio out there.

Edit: Also I find the mindset of finding the exact best music is kind of unhealthy. Building a tolerance for meh actually helps me discover things that don’t immediately and instantly appeal to me, and I think that leads to more musical variety in the long run than the skip-happy attitude streaming encourages.

I do. But I do it mainly to support the creators I follow. I’m not going to sign up for a bunch of patreon or channel subscriptions, but at least they can get their share of the subscription money.

Yeah, they’re worth maybe $5 a month or family. It’s just a bunch of B-F rate videos and they pay anyone that’s not in the B tier so little than you need to support them on patreon anyway.
I’ve been having a few problems with playback on ReVanced recently; it tends to buffer for a minute and the quality seems to be stuck on 480p. Any workarounds mentioned didn’t work for long.
Desktop with uBlock has been fine though.
Revanced is dying because OSumAtrix, the lead dev, is so toxic every other developer decided to hard fork revanced and make Morphe.
What’s really sad is Osum is copying code religiously from Morphe, including typos. They also forget to change function names or comments to go from Morphe to Revanced. As a result, Morphe DMCA’d him for not complying with the attribution clause of their GPL license.
It’s a whole mess but basically it’s one guy trying to replace dozens of contributors by copying code. He’s never going to sustain it like this, so just use Morphe honestly…
It’s updated daily (sometimes multiple times a day) and it seems like they can’t stop adding new QoL features to the patcher. Their patches work great, I highly recommend it.

I had this issue, it was super annoying. I uninstalled and reinstalled with the latest update and everything worked great again and has been doing so for well over a year. I went down that rabbit hole of trying to update the spoofing settings per fuckyouspez threads and none of those recommendations ever worked for me. Hope this helps!
You could try grayjay. Worked better for me than revanced but still had the occasional video not loading

MicroG enables me to sign into YouTube using my Google account, as far as I know Grayjay doesn’t support this.
Oh, I sign into google for the age verification in grayjay. I’m not sure if that requires MicroG though.
Keep in mind the sign in for grayjay is only for age verification. It never pulled my subscribed channels or playlists into the app from the youtubr account. As far as I see, it only shows me recently watched videos and channels subbed through grayjay itself.
I am using a non rooted one plus and I was able to set GJ as the default YouTube. I just had to change which links it could open by default. What are you using? This is where I had to make the change.
