She had been sent to the scene of a crash involving a Land Rover Freelander and Ford Explorer on the A189 Spine Road in Cramlington at 23:10 BST on Monday, but was injured when a black Mercedes crashed into a marked police car. She died in hospital on Wednesday.

A 73-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on bail.

If you can’t avoid hitting a stationary object on the road, then you shouldn’t be driving. If you drive in a situation where you shouldn’t be driving, and you cause a death with your incompetence, then I don’t see the difference between this and other forms of manslaughter.

I feel I should mention this is not limited to the elderly. Lots of people will get distracted by - and drift towards - blinky lights and accident scenes. I mentioned this recently in a discussion about fire trucks, their positioning on a highway (at a diagonal directing away from the scene of the accident) is due to this.

Nearly got hit myself some years back, night time accidents are worse because the lights are so visible and people are usually tired.
