  • Missing the key point though… your general concept is absolutely right… it’s failed over and over again because it can’t keep up with the fact that it’s cheaper and better performance with what you can buy locally, on top of bandwidth access etc… But there’s 2 ways to make one product a more common option, option A, try to make the one you want them to use better, but with AI they’ve done something different, they are working towards making local systems worse.

    Key point is, the direction of attack. Instead of making remote compute better, cheaper, faster etc… what if the attack is make local hardware, more expensive, harder to get, less reliable, or even illegal.

    Right now, all of that is happening, on top of course of windows being more bloated, hardware costs are multiplying at a rate never seen before, even for outdated hardware. Netflix and spotify have already adapted the public into no longer buying physical medium for movies and music, and as people are also noting, governments making more and more regulations come in place on say OS’s needing age gates, 3d printers needing to report to the government etc… It’s literally an orchestrated perfect storm to be pushing people away from owning computers.

    The point is they aren’t trying to “catch up” to local hardware, they are trying to hinder the ability to obtain local hardware.


  • I don’t think they said they were “better”, if I recall they did “almost as much with far less resources”. and really the bigger thing was they were releasing a lot as open source.

    IMO I think that’s what the real tech giants are worried about. Honestly I think I’m actually seeing the real goal of AI… and the worse part of it is, AI is the secondary feature.

    Sam Altmen made a comment on wanting to see basically compute sold as like a utility to people. Crucial is getting out of selling hardware to people. I’m leaning towards the idea that the ballooning hardware costs isn’t a side effect, it’s the primary intention. The idea of it is basically to move all of computing to a model more like Netflix, or say what Googles stadia gaming console was etc…

    The goal is a future where personal PCs are a rare luxury like power generators. For normal use we get crappy thin clients to connect to cloud services with our software. Super government and corporate friendly. Everything super accessible by government and scannable for AI training etc… Encryption can basically become meaningless because they can log straight into the machines.

    China’s a big threat because… they could encourage in house models. IE an agent that runs in your house, or companies run them in their server rooms, and most importantly they can be trained individually with your personal data and company data, without creating the privacy and security nightmares of wondering if chatgpt could share all of your personal information with a random dude or competing company. Plus if we are talking individual hardware, that hurts the actual overall goal of shifting all focus of all hardware manufacturers towards data center modules that consumers and even medium sized businesses can only rent.




  • because it takes luck and a certain kind of unethicalness to do so. IE you can go in there and have chatgpt write you 20 romance novels etc… and publish them on amazon. but more likely than not they will all be buried and all you are really doing is making it less likely for a real up and coming artist to be discovered. Point is most of the AI slop requires some kinds of connections or something to make it actually make money… 99% of it is just trashing the environment and making long shot legitimate creations even less likely to be discovered.

    In short most of us aren’t looking to make the internet and the world worse, for what effectively amounts to a .01% chance to make money… most of those who actually manage to string it out and make big profits before the bubble pops are ones who already have a lot of resources and connections to do evil and unethical things already.


  • What if instead they feed into every bubble to try and render powerful computer hardware outside the price range of anyone but millionares. While gradually encouraging a more, data center based control system so that rather than getting PC hardware ourselves… we’ll instead only be able to afford basic cheap thin clients, made to connect to a more powerful virtual machine that is capable of running games or anything that requires any power, but of course we can’t control what’s monitored on it to prevent it from spying on us or refusing to allow us to do tasks that aren’t approved by the company that owns the servers, which will be taking requests from the government.

    Course that’s a hypothetical dystopia, I can’t imagine that happening.





  • Unfortunately the biggest part is, there’s kind of 2 definitions of bias at this point.

    There’s the older, what I’d consider should be the truer form where bias is about taking a side or leaning the interpretation of the established facts on things that don’t have a 100% perfect consistant answer. IE Sportsball team A is better than sportsball team B, when obviously every part of that equasion is a dynamic, every player has good and bad days. good and bad weather conditions etc… who they’ve played against and how good they are etc…

    Same for political concepts where at the very least it’s worth noting there’s no agreed upon by all of political science good and bad with regards to ideas etc…

    Then you’ve got the type B bias where… well one side is outright denying the objective facts. Going to the sportsball analogy, that’s like one side says “Team A won 900 to 0 against team B”, while fans of team B go “look the game’s score is right here… team b won 52-20”. and they call you bias for trusting the sportsball leagues official scores, and the game that aired on national television, over the word of team A’s number one fan.


  • The enigma machine is over 80 years old now. That was just the last machine before modern computing. There were all sorts of other machines and techniques for cryptography long before the modern era. The first forms of encryption are over 3500 years old.

    well of course they existed. But I can’t think of an example of a pre-internet era where forms of encryption of a grade high enough to stop law enforcement, and probably all/most government can read them, was easy and accessible enough that your average highschooler would without thinking about it encrypt a grocery list he’s sending to his mom.

    So easy a child could use it… or the current secretary of war (with some minor mistakes of adding in reporters into rooms etc…).
