Hello you absolute legends!!! Happen to have an extra $230,000 you want to send me? Until next time you absolute legends!!!
I haven’t watched Jobst’s videos for a while. I was in understanding that the lawsuit was about cheating allegations. At least that’s what Jobst implied. It seems that wasn’t the case after all. It was about (false) claims Jobst made in a video published in 2021.
Overall I think that Jobst went way too far with Billy Mitchell.
Billy Mitchell isnt the record holder. Twin Galaxy removed his records from the leaderboard and put it in an archive.
He has a wife, kids and a house, now he’s going to have to pay $600k and his wife will probably leave him along with the kids because he wouldn’t shut up about a Donkey Kong court case.
Unfortunate. It still doesn’t change the fact that Billy Mitchell is a huge loser.
Silly Bitchell
Billy Mitchell is an asshole and Karl Jobst is yet another YouTube outrage peddler, just video game flavored this time. I have a hard time mustering sympathy for either of them.
Mitchell sucks, but falsely claiming that he drove a person to suicide is a dick move to say the least.
As soon as I heard that line in the video, I thought to myself, “oh no Karl, that might have been a bridge too far.”
It’s unfortunate but Karl really thought to himself, “I’m going to say the most inflammatory shit about the most litigious person on the internet, and because Billy is such a huge loser I can’t fail!”
The annoying thing is that Mitchell is going to use this to falsely claim he has been cleared of cheating allegations. Dude is an insufferable cunt.
pcgamer.com with the spineless headline which should have read “Donkey Kong cheater Billy Mitchell”
Jobst was pleading for donations to help fight the lawsuit for a long time. Constantly making videos about it to get more viewers, sympathy and money. All to then run his mouth costing him the case.
Edit: Turns out Jobst was running his mouth the whole time. With so much donated money on the line, it was important to communicate the details of the case accurately but Jobst failed to do so. He made a lot content about it (monetized and sponsored) but was too arrogant about his chances of winning. IMO not as serious, careful or tactful as he should have been throughout.
Edit x2: Monday-morning lawyering from me but I stopped watching Jobst a long time ago because I just wasn’t on board.
I stopped watching the day i looked in the description for more info on the topic, and it was only for sponsor-of-the-month. Felt like the prioroty was sponsor, while the gameplay/story is in the back seat.
Similar experience for me. I was interested in the case at first cause I was hoping Billy Mitchell might face some consequences for his vexatious approach to litigation. Using threats of lawsuits to silence critics etc. But soon in it became clear to me that Jobst was using any excuse to make content, then padding out those videos with ads and petty attacks/lame jokes, all the while asking for more donations. I stopped watching early on.
Wow, but I thought Billy Mitchell was that cheaty guy
He still is a cheater.
The lawsuit wasn’t about him cheating (he was). It was about a claim that he drove someone to suicide (he didn’t).
The award is based on the suicide claim and not the cheating claim.
Does anyone have the video where Jobst makes the claim that Mitchel drove Smith to suicide?
As if Mitchell can BE defamed.
implied that Mitchell’s settlement with Smith involved the latter paying him a large sum of money, ultimately leading to his suicide in 2020. Jobst also claimed in the video that Mitchell had “expressed joy at the thought” of Smith’s death. It was this—and not any claim about the legitimacy of Mitchell’s Donkey Kong scores—that prompted Mitchell to sue Jobst.
Yeeeah… I’m coming in to this situation cold, aside from seeing King of Kong years ago. Billy is without question an asshole, but saying he was happy about a suicide AND that the suicide was linked to his lawsuit, are both pretty clear cut examples of defamation.
As it turned out though, Mitchell very much did joke about Apollo Legend committing suicide years before it actually happened. https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/queensland/video-game-champion-regrets-jokes-about-death-rumour-20240917-p5kbd9.html ( https://archive.is/sYEwg )
Meh. According to the source you posted, that exchange was simply “my wife found two reports that Apollo Legend committed suicide. If it’s true, I will not shed a tear. I will try to suppress a smile or a giggle.” Yes, considering Apollo’s eventual death, it’s shitty, no doubt.
However, according to your source, that was in a private text to an unidentified party, who I presume is affiliated with Mitchell either socially or professionally. It wasn’t a public post, and it wasnt directed to Apollo. It doesn’t even state that Mitchell hopes that it is true. Just that he’s not going to be broken up about it. I’ve said far more inflammatory shit with regards to the barons of the American insurance industry. Does that mean that I should be found culpable for the death of Brian Thompson? I sure hope not.
Caveat: I only read the source you posted, so perhaps there’s wider context I’m missing.
It was supposed to be private between Mitchell and someone else in the scene. I don’t mean to say that it makes Jobst’s big claim true, just that Mitchell isn’t entirely absolved and Jobst wasn’t completely wrong on everything either.
The 118 page court judgment is online (I can’t expect anyone to read it) and in general, the court sides with Jobst on most things, it’s just that none of it really applies to the big “caused Apollo’s suicide” claim Mitchell actually sued over. That’s on a different level.
This one time he truly was. April Fools came kicking ass this year…
Wait, he lost? How
The article makes it pretty clear. Jobst always implied the lawsuit was over the cheating allegations, which wasn’t the case. He claimed in one of his videos that Mitchell drove another Youtuber to suicide by suing him and forcing him to pay a large sum of money. As it turns out, that Youtuber didn’t have to pay anything at all. The settlement was just to take his existing videos down and not make any further videos about Mitchell. Honestly seems justified to me and not a good look for Jobst.
Ah, so Jobst was just lying to his audience for years about it all. I always thought he seemed kinda sus.
I hope he makes a video exposing himself for a cheater
I see
WTF
Deffo cases are truth defense here in Australia FYI for added context.
