To me the original post gave off vibes of “catchy meme that gets shared around Facebook for a week without anyone fact-checking it.” We’re swimming in so much mis/disinformation, that I came to the comments expecting to find out which aspect of this meme wasn’t true.

Thankfully, Lemmy seems to have more skeptics than most social networks, and true to form, multiple people have chimed in with this correction. I love that so many of us care about the truth, and are willing to pull up the facts and share them. These are traits we need to foster more of in the world.

Yeah, i’d like to see OP at least correct the title of the post.

I had fact checked it before looking at the comments. I came in here with a correction in hand and saw it wasn’t necessary. It made me proud to be part of a community that values the truth.

I thought that’s what it looked like. Thanks for the reference.

Also, I’m not sure who thinks that an engraved stone is a “plaque.”

And no malice here, but yes. We all need to practice checking shit before we pass it on.

I know I’ve been guilty and had to go back and correct myself. Most recently in that AWS was taken out by literally a dude with an axe. (It was not. It was DNS. It’s always DNS.)

the axe thing also doesn’t pass the sniff test

if you were given an axe and access to any location with no security and unlocked doors for 10min, i doubt you’d be able to take out any single even tiny part of AWS

well okay maybe a tiny part… as in perhaps a single AZ, but that loss of service wouldn’t effect service availability

major outages are always caused by technical issues… things like network partitions, split brain, etc cause far more cascading issues because incorrect is much worse than unresponsive

I’ve been seeing a ton more misinformation in memes on Lemmy the past month or so. It’ll never happen but I wish the mods would require sources on those posts.

It’s especially frustrating because it’s not like we need to invent things to make the right look bad. We can just point to the things that are actually true…things that are way worse than destroying quote on a brick.

4 hours later with at least one report and this post is still up, still getting upvoted. How many people have seen this and believe it’s true? How many have shared it? Meme culture is a cancer

I think it would be helpful if people (who are knowledgeable about the topic) can link to sources about why a post is wrong/misinformation. The mod is more likely to act on the report if they can quickly verify the content.

I say this as an admin that can see the reports go by, but it often isn’t my place to take action since the report is about something that the community moderators would need to decide on.

I found this post because someone reported it as “lies”. If I was a mod in this community, I would need to hunt through the comment chains to figure out what the problem is, and right now there is only one or two comments explaining the problem. For this specific post, the mod could also look up the quote, find matching photos, and verify that the other monument hasn’t been torn down recently. However, it’s not always that easy.

It would also be good for users to delete their own posts when something is wrong, or at the very least to edit the title with added context.

And some people know how to harness it.

Phase 1 was start a joke, ban anyone who calls it out. Very similar things are still happening, and I don’t know how to counter it on anonymous social media.

Not sure if I was misinformed by a meme but I only learned that in 2016 when a Canadian redditor clarified and, of course, apologized for not having done it

I don’t want to sound too “radical,” but I’m starting to suspect he may be acting as if he hates America, because he hates America.

      known asshole lolcow.

Anytime someone is referred to as a lolcow, I immediately assume the person in question is cool and the person using lolcow is a negative IQ 'gator/low rent 4chan troll.

Calling people lolcows tells everyone you’re actually the asshole in the conversation, since you’re explicitly saying you think it’s cool to harass people for laughs.

      Thanks for the self report!
