is omarchy a new distro or new window manager?
I stopped distro hop a while ago, and fixing tiling configs is not worth it anymore for me.
It uses Hyprland, not a new wm
Neither, it’s apparently a set of not very good bash scripts to configure Arch to use Hyprland and a few apps marketed as a “professional” distro.
omarchy looks like shit software made by shit people, i don’t get why it’s keep being talked about lol
I watched the Livakiwi vid. Apparently it has some cool fixes for people, too lazy/stupid to google and fix some minor wayland issues.

I understand that people are frustrated that the distro is getting more attention than it deserves, but to me, the product itself seems fine (apart from the developer’s politics, but if I never tried or used something made by someone I disagree with, I wouldn’t be using Lemmy). I wanted to try Hyprland, I wanted to see how useful it could be and whether I’d like it. Omarchy had a useful template that had everything important predefined and ready to go. I see a lot of people complaining about the pre-installed bloat, but a lot of it is just web apps and it’s extremely easy to remove any of it. As someone who never used Arch or Hyprland, Omarchy was an extremely useful way to get started and to learn how to use it and customise it without having to spend days figuring out how to even get the basics working.
Go with whatever you want to go, my friend! People are mad because of the politics rather than the software itself (not going to lie, THERE ARE questionable software choices, but it doesn’t change the fact that most people didn’t even check it)

Why is DHH a pile of shit? I see this echoed a lot and I’m not familiar with his history beyond his hey and basecamp infrastructure stories after his spat with Apple.
As far as I can tell his takes are fine in that regard. I’m assuming his motivations for his troubles with apple aren’t altruistic in nature, at least not purely, but I don’t expect any businessman to be in any regard.
I’m genuinely curious, I’d love to learn more.

And that’s all anyone seems to care about. You don’t hear this shit for all the other assholes in FOSS. Only DHH. It’s embarrassing.
I will see people do this for other FLOSS developers, and I think it’s bad in those cases too. I don’t want to name them because I feel like that’s not worth the effort and frankly we shouldn’t give any attention to complaints about a dev’s personal opinions or character.
By contrast, I respect the critiques of his actual software, which mostly seem to be fair. I do wonder how much people would even be looking into it if they didn’t have strong opinions about his opinions, but as long as it’s accurate that’s what matters.
Other FOSS people don’t tend to get loads of money from Cloudflare or all this attention for what’s not even that interesting a project.
The Ladybird project is also run by someone who’s said some bad things but it hasn’t exploded in popularity or received 6 figures in corporate donations. Something feels off about this Omarchy hype… like, the product isn’t even that amazing, so the only thing I imagine could explain this difference is that it’s DHH doing it.

For real. There’s EndeavourOS which at least uses the Archlinux repos and seems to be just better AFAIK.

I do hope that these companies start to dig one inch deeper at least before providing grants and stuff, it really is a slap in the face of proper distributions (though I feel like the author’s recommendation of Manjaro is misguided 👀), of course at the end of the day they can give money to whoever the hell they want, but if they want to make good publicity, they’d better make sure they get it rightagree on Manjaro. It’s also easy to break in my 6 months experience in 2021. I’m now on Fedora since. Though I think EndeavourOS is a nicer choice for simplified Arch. Or maybe Archlinux itself has gotten easier with archinstall. But I myself have not tinker with distrohopping since I’m on Fedora.
Same here, Fedora, in particular, once atomic, I’m never looking back on my machines.
Before that I once used Endeavour and can vouch for its reliability
