Squash. The vines are thorny and help deter animals munching your corn. Its called the Three Sisters

My first thought when I saw this was damn this is freaky and they haven’t even brought in the third sister yet…
Imagine how long humanity suffered before figuring out that crops have to take turns. Like imagine millennia ago realizing that your crops aint growing because the dirt doesn’t have enough nutrients. And then having to explain to everyone that the crops should take turns it sounds crazy.
I get what you’re saying, but this isn’t an example of that. The three sisters provided benefits to each other while growing simultaneously.

I don’t think it’s been proven that the nitrogen the beans/bacteria fix is available to the corn (before the bean plants die and decompose). Though, I have done this (along with squash), and it does seem to work pretty well. I think it gives you more vegetables per sq ft, than if you were to grow them all separately.
I’m a simple man. I see corn, I upvote corn.
