I legit looked into the cost of buying up land in a city ravaged by fire. For about 1/3 of the cost of the average home there, I would have enough plots of land (with working gas, electric, water, and sewer hookups. Only getting ones with recertified hookups doubled the cost) to strong-arm the local council with ~2 people per plot. Sure, then we’d all need homes and stuff, but we can work on that. So we get all the benefits of a recognized City and address, utilities, and work done before, but at a price that would be very affordable for my part of the country.
Or a commune in the city itself!
Cities are communes.
I want to so bad. Unfortunately any plot of land that’s worthwhile is too expensive
where I live all the large rural plots and farmland has been purchased by big corpos.
That’s why you team up
Everyone I know to do it with is broke too
I hear there’s a guy starting a commune in Honduras.
Source? I’m a curious cat.
Oh worse than expected. I hear he knowwwws the anti christ~
I feel bad buying up land in the third world, feels like taking it out from under them. if I’m forced out of the US then I suppose then it’s ok
You squat
reading about historical communes, that was a common reason for failure. learning from history would suggest against that
We’ll burn half as long, but twice as bright!
me, my best friend, her husband, and our mutual friends all want to charter a nonprofit llc charity organization whose mission is to aid individuals who do not have stable housing and, through this organization because corporations have more rights than people in this hellscape nightmare world, purchase this particular gorgeous 18 acre plot of land in rural [REDACTED STATE]. there, we shall found our Gay Furry Commune, sharing our roof and walls with those who lack, non-transactionally, although persons who are lgbtq etc we intend to prioritize for assistance–specifically to help them EVACUATE THE UNITED STATES. Or, if they manage to build up the gumption and elbow grease, to metastasize into a gay furry commune branch of their own, provided we can help them locate an available land plot, guide them through the organizational setup, and coordinate the assets.
Housing is so absurdly expensive that we figure even a ‘donate what you can’ (and if you have nothing to give then that is okay) model that brutally undercuts the market by 90% on average will still be enough to balance the nonprofit’s ledger or even expand its mission. Because It’s not that a nonprofit can’t ‘make money’–it’s that it can’t keep money. The funds gathered via donation etc must be earmarked for the work. An organization still has bills to pay and has to be able to hire contractors for specialized work on occasion, they have to have a budget for the pursuit of projects.
Landlords get to keep their ill gotten gains. This organization does not. Its books are required to be transparent, its funds are required to be accounted for, with absolutely no “payouts” to “investors”.
I tried commune life, would not recommend.
I’d suggest an RV park/tiny house neighborhood, that’s the best way to get something that could meet most people’s needs and might actually be stable and sustainable. And have a community garden.
People today watching old SNL sketches: “You know what? I actually do want to live in a van down by the river.”
Paying attention in school, working hard and saving up in hopes of one day owning a van down by the river. Maybe even one that runs…
If you ever join a cult or commune, ask about the toilet situation first
When I was little my family got invited to join this rich hippy’s commune, we got to see the “plans” ahead of time, and noticed that every bathroom had multiple toilets facing each other with no privacy barriers, the organizer also kept boasting about how they would use their sewage to fertilize the gardens.
I’m sure this all creates a lot more questions than anything else, but the short answer is no, my family wanted nothing to do with that kook’s crazy caca cult compound when they were making their own.
they would use their sewage to fertilize the gardens.
as im sure youre aware: absolutely terrible idea, anyone says this to you: run.
You have to maintain human waste at a 10:1 poop:notpoop mixture, and then a 3:1 poop-mixture:greenery ratio at 135°F and 6.5pH for at least 30 days with regular turning and mixing before you can use it.
Buyer beware - farming is actually really hard work
I have no idea why people romanticize the countryside. You wanna work at a farm? Go ahead without me
Not saying it’s easy, but I think in some ways, it’s quite a bit more fulfilling with the effort to payoff ratio. Plus, I assume it might work in a pleasant way if one actually has a community where people are willing to help out and do things together
It’s a very romantic view. Places like that already exist and are called farming villages. There’s a good reason most people leave them for the cities.
Yeah, true. It certainly is a romantic view. But I don’t know, the mind yearns for an escape from the rat race in this capitalistic system
I work in tech and all I want to do is work on a farm instead. Someday.

Thats all my family wants too. I could do without all social media and connectivity. Just let me and my wife have a little farm where we make bread and I make jewelry and we can trade eggs and produce for shoes and gloves. Im really not asking for much.
You can buy a large plot of land by the city.
Can you? Because in many places areas adjacent to cities have been turned into car-centric suburbs
The wealthiest people I know live on big plots of land just outside of town. They pay less than half the property tax, have more than double the land you would in the city at the same price, and it’s only a couple minute drive into the city for ammenities
If you are into this there is a cool newsletter called “Supernuclear” that you should look up
Started checking it out, this is awesome, Thanks! I’ve had trouble digging up resources for this kinda stuff in the past.
I’d love to do this, I need to connect with more people.
I found my people, just commune in the city for me personally
Who leaked my plans?
As some Ontario advice. Look for an unorganized township, otherwise the cost of permits will make it unattainable.
I would love that. I have genuinely talked about that to my fellas but unfortunately we are too broke to purchase a plot of land, let alone build a house on it
Let’s play Wild Girls! 🐕🐩
