When I was married, my wife sent me to go pick up a meat freezer she told me was being given away. Go down to the spot and meet the people with the freezer, get brought in to the house to unplug and cart the fridge out to my vehicle, but the other people were a bit akward about it and it was kinda weird. Find out when I get back home they were actually asking for $150, not giving it away and my wife just lied to me, and the people selling it never spoke up while I was leaving. So I basically stole someone’s freezer.

Even the whole “Let’s meet at a public place to do the transaction” thing is considered weird around here. You just give the buyer your home address and a time to show up and pick up their stuff. Way less hassle because it doesn’t disturb your schedule much if the buyer ends up not showing up.

Some places it’s warranted and in others it’s not. I would say most places in the US where people behave that way it doesn’t seem warranted. Its funny, I live mostly in a third world country these days and even I had fear and trepidation about my first time coming here years ago but honestly it’s safer than places I’ve lived in the US and in some ways far more free. Want to live off grid? Have a well, be off the electrical grid? Cool no problem. Want to build a structure? No permits needed if you own the land.
