Discord announced on Monday that it’s rolling out age verification on its platform globally starting next month, when it will automatically set all users’ accounts to a “teen-appropriate” experience unless they demonstrate that they’re adults.

Users who aren’t verified as adults will not be able to access age-restricted servers and channels, won’t be able to speak in Discord’s livestream-like “stage” channels, and will see content filters for any content Discord detects as graphic or sensitive. They will also get warning prompts for friend requests from potentially unfamiliar users, and DMs from unfamiliar users will be automatically filtered into a separate inbox.

Direct messages and servers that are not age-restricted will continue to function normally, but users won’t be able to send messages or view content in an age-restricted server until they complete the age check process, even if it’s a server they were part of before age verification rolled out. Savannah Badalich, Discord’s global head of product policy, said in an interview with The Verge that those servers will be “obfuscated” with a black screen until the user verifies they’re an adult. Users also won’t be able to join any new age-restricted servers without verifying their age.

Badalich also says after the October data breach, Discord “immediately stopped doing any sort of age verification flows with that vendor” and is now using a different third-party vendor.

    Oh thanks, it’s fixed

The ID is immediately deleted. We do not keep any information around like your name, the city that you live in, if you used a birth certificate or something else, any of that information.

Of course, but they also derive demographic information from all the texts, links, communities you interact with.

Minecraft Java is (now) a source available (I dont know if thats the right term, but new java edition versions are now completely deobfuscated.) game where anyone can either play offline or spin up their own server to play multiplayer, even with no connection to mojang’s servers. I dont think its a big concern. There’s already a mod for Java to just remove the age verification.

Also, there isnt really an alternative for a game. There are only other similiar in genre games.

Ok, let’s say it is. They just want to invade our privacy. Now set that aside.

On a separate topic: What’s an alternative solution for the “there’s porn on the playground” problem that discord has? They are participants in it, they are facilitators. They shouldn’t be immune. Giving platforms a pass on things like this is pernicious. Giving platforms a pass is why Elon Musk thinks he can get away with CSAM generators.

Are platforms responsible for the content their users post? No. Rules for unusual situations (CSAM, terrorism, copyright, etc) have been established for probably decades by this point.

An online chat/message board is not comparable to an image generator because the company is not creating potentially harmful content.

These are actually separate issues. TPB isn’t legally responsible for theft if someone leaks an unreleased song. But, the publishing company can sue them for damages related to lost income based on TPB’s distribution of content.

Right, it’s weird that parents let kids play on platforms that have porn on them. Something needs to be done, maybe we should go after the parents instead.

Or is the answer just saying parents should do something and then do nothing? We need a clever solution that does not involve sharing proof of identity… any ideas? Banning adult content completely would work too.

No just voice channels, I’m glad they have them but it was completely missing from their marketing on the website. Just says “text channels done right” and there isn’t a single line about voice support

Edit, found a reddit post from about a month ago which is copied below. So it looks like it barely supports voice so far.

"Apparently The voice chat feature has been brought back in stoat

It only works in the desktop version though. Mobile devices you’re going to have to wait a bit longer though.

Otherwise the quality of it is really really good but you will experience a massive delay in your voice being sent through the voice medium. It’s about 800 millisecond delay even with the fastest speeds. But at least it’s something. "

Reposting my reply from another thread, just to keep people informed:

Keep in mind everyone that Stoat still doesn’t currently protect it’s users information and is centralized. It doesn’t use encryption but it is very seamless. You can host your own Stoat instance but it doesn’t communicate with the main one. The devs have said they plan to add more security features in the future yet still don’t make it a priority. The host of Stoat should be able to see everyone’s messages, including in DM’s, due to the lack of E2E encryption. Once they add more security features I imagine they will be much more popular in general.

Discord and github are the two platforms barely anyone dares to speak about. The Foss community barely mentions the usage of such platforms, despite nearly all of projects use discord as the support line.

It is really such a shame, since those projects make a significant contribution to open source software in one area. but just shits itself in the other.

At least public githubs aren’t difficult to access and/or crawl. The big issue with Discord is that there is a wealth of information locked behind a proprietary system.

Unlike forums or even reddit, there is not way to get to most of the information posted on discord.

A lot of discord content is private, and those that aren’t require you to have discord to search. On top of that, I’m pretty sure you need to join a server before you can search it’s contents.

Since I don’t use discord, there is no real way for me to access content hosted on it. Compared to Reddit or a Forum, I don’t need to be a member of the community to access information shared there.

Sounds like we are talking about different kinds of “access”. My original post was just lamenting that to the general web, discord is like a black hole. Things go there and never come out as you can only access the content through its app.

GDPR laws allow you to download the contents of a Discord server that you have never been on? I thought it only required access to your own data.

Free software contributors I hang out with do mention the likes of irc, matrix, codeberg, and activitypub’ising git a lot.

No time to waste mentioning inferior software that’s abusive.

        Let alone use it.

It would mean a lot to me if open source projects used op n source coms for discussions. I tried discord recently and couldnt even get prast email verification. I went into a server, asked questions and couldn’t check to see if they were answered. Sorry people I ghosted!

What discussions happen on discord? I’m late 20s and play video games regularly and I have never used it. Thought it was where people streamed themselves playing video games or selling bathwater or whatever. Back in the day my home boys and I used to chat on teamspeak while gaming, but who has time for that shit anymore? My gaming is almost all single player or with the wifey 3 feet to my left lol.

        What discussions happen on discord?

You ever have an issue with anything and you find the answer on some random reddit discussion that ends up in your search results when you’re looking around?

Discord isn’t really like the older methods of chatting, where people used platforms to chat for the sake of chatting. Entire communities from forums decided to just upend everything and move into discord. Niche software and other files are often shared among discord communities, or assistance for said files and programs is offered only through specific discord communities.

The platform is still better than anything we had back in the day, it’s just that for some reason people have decided that everything needs to be stored in there.

Anyway, I don’t see much changing. People will probably attempt to take this culture onto whatever new platform they move onto.

The cybersecurity certification companies use discord for support exclusively, and no you can’t use a different company because they are the ones the market recognizes. Offsec, Altered Security, for example.

A ton of game companies (especially indies) have moved bug reports and patch notes over to discord. Suggesting something on the steam forums often gets you redirected to their discord server. And it’s not just gaming companies. I’ve got several pieces of software that the easiest way to find out about betas and updates are to use their discord server. It feels fairly unavoidable if you want to stay informed.

Even their forum-esque feature really sucks. You can’t easily navigate within it, and it’s an endlessly scrolling feed rather than a paginated one, so good luck if you need access to a specific portion of a particularly long thread.

I’ve been waiting for Discord to die for years now.

Tonight I’ve tried a bunch of options

revolt/stoat, and I couldn’t make voice channels at all. If I could and it worked fine probably would have used that immediately

spacebar chat, got the server running just fine, no idea which UI to use, and when I tried the options I couldn’t connect to the server and it was really clunky

setup team speak 6, immediately wanted me to create an account on their servers, rm -rf

setup mumble - might actually work, but looks like ass, friends are gonna be skeptical

setting up full blown matrix now I guess.

For a potential 1:1 Discord alternative? The one that has stood out to me is Guilded. I started looking at alternatives last year when talk about this was starting to float around and forgot about it.

Here’s a recent article with alternatives that I found in a quick search. Don’t agree with all of them personally, but I’m not the target audience for some of them.

For an exact 1:1 replacement? Yeah, I do agree about that. If anyone looking for options doesn’t mind making some compromises it opens the doors quite a bit.

I shared in another reply a link to some alternatives. Guilded seems to be the closest to a 1:1 replacement for now.

My personal concern is having to repeat this again if the next proprietary platform becomes too big. My friend group has gone through google hangouts (it was a different time lol), the curse client, which became a Twitch product eventually and then Discord.

I’m at the point where I’m considering going back to web forums and things like teamspeak/ventrillo.

Roblox is asking for the same thing to use chat in-game, but they split people in age groups (9-12, 18-20…), and you can only talk to players in your age group.

Yeah, except it’s not like you get to choose. If you are on the Discord server for rock climbing in your country, you can leave the community, but you don’t have “other options”.

It’s not like the question is “what platform do I want to use for X?”. The question is “The X community uses Discord, do I want to be in it or not?” And of course you can choose to not join, but you don’t have an option to choose another app.

I definitely get what you’re saying on that. Leaving behind communities that you’re a part of, potentially for years or longer, is not appealing.

The sad reality is that is where each individual person will have to weigh their options and beliefs.

For me personally, I’m already down to just a few personal communities on Discord and for the one that I run, I will be migrating to either something like Stoat, Matrix or even a good old fashioned web forum. This all stems from not trusting Discord with my personal information, which works for me. Obviously not a one size fits all situation.

It would be nice to see Discord realize that they’re making a huge mistake and backtrack the decision, but I don’t see that happening.

Perhaps this will lead to communities migrating to web forums down the road? Only time will tell.

Anyway this is what replying against your original comment looks like: you are blaming an economy system of political (parties) policies. The more socialist governments turns the more control government have over everything (including economic systems), the more, well, controlling the State becomes. Democracy doesn’t need to be capitalist, and social-democracy is just a political system.

how is a government requirement for age verification forcing a company to implement a non profitable change the fault of capitalism? I guess the 10 years have been a good sample of what capitalism does to a platform. Discord saw a problem and used VC capital to build one of the most well engineered platforms on the market with hundreds of millions of free users and many happy to pay to support it.

There’s tens of millions of messages, doing just fine.

Stoat seems pretty good, but it’s still a bit buggy. It kept disconnecting and reconnecting, but I logged out and then back in again and that fixed it.

Ok. Well I will delete my account then.

This kind of enshittification is intolerable. The reason this exists is solely to tie your online behaviour to your real life identity.

“They” want to control people’s conversations in the digital third spaces. And to find ways to punish you for the thoughts they disapprove of. Discord is happy to sell that data to whomever is buying it.

    Oh well. More fediverse, please!

Discord is not needed. Quit. Kill it. Watch them BEG to get us back, then say no.
