It’s not the owner (although pretty often the owner doesn’t help matters), it’s the breed. I sincerely don’t know how many children have to be eaten by these monsters before everyone wakes up to the reality of these dogs. They have bloodsport fighting genetics hard wired into their brains, the same way you can’t stop a pointer from pointing or a herding dog from herding. They are the most impulsive breed, and they turn even on kind and loving owners all the time. Pit bull owners will flock to the comments to gaslight everyone about what wonderful dogs they are and how they must have been triggered by the child breathing or blinking and it’s not the dog’s fault. I’m attaching an image of such an argument I saw today.
I think many pit bull owners secretly like owning a killer dog, and just have some sort of oppositional defiance that makes them want to prove to everyone how wonderful their dog is, and until the dog turns on them will defend them to insane degrees. I think they like seeing people and pets and livestock get hurt or killed. I understand some people get caught up in romantic thoughts shaped by publications like The Dodo of helping a poor abused dog become a wonderful pet, and I totally understand wanting to help, and this isn’t their fault, but stark reality sets in quickly when they bring the dog home and it promptly tears apart their cat.
The Bennard family is a prime example, they are middle class people who lovingly raised their pits from puppies, and when they were 8 years old one day the dogs killed their baby and toddler and hospitalized the mom in the ICU. Pieces of that baby were everywhere. Apparently the reason was because the toddler picked up the ball the mom was throwing for the dogs, but she had had to break up a very vicious fight between the dogs shortly before. For that two innocent children lost their lives, from family pets who were lovingly raised.
I know what many of the comments here will be like, but I stand convinced that not one of these dogs is safe simply because of genetics. They are doing what they are bred for, and it’s high past time people get realistic about them.

k
You people talk like eugenicists.
I mean, I got mauled and hospitalized by a pit bull as a little kid.
…I don’t agree. I’ve had pitt bulls lick me in the face, and “friendly” breeds with bad owners literally snap at my crotch.
I don’t have a dog in this fight (ha), I just wanted to chime in that people who say things like carbrain and pitnutter give the exact same icky vibe as righties calling people libtard
It’s partially a skill level issue that people are negligent about and are not competent and unbiased about assessing. Pitbull rescue, training and handling is for experienced and skilled adults who can control large powerful dogs. Not a dog for children or for unsupervised visitations. The dogs should not be bred, either.
It’s right in the name. Pit as in “the ring”.
It doesn’t matter what effort you put into them. They still snap all the time.
There was a farm on Facebook whose owners went out one day recently and came back to find their entire livestock population slaughtered, all the goats, rabbits, chickens and sheep. They didn’t kill them to eat them, they killed them for fun.
I know it’s tiring, and more effort than a lazy mind is willing to give to a class they’ve already decided is ‘evil’ but all things must be judged individually. ‘Pit bull’ is about as useful a term in determining expected behavior in dogs as the word ‘retriever,’ which is to say not much. There are dogs labeled ‘pit bull’ who are massively territorial and defensive, and others that are more likely to hide under a blanket than get into an altercation. People love having an explanation so they can feel clever when they say, ‘oh, he’s a hammer tailed waffle bottom. That’s why he likes to sniff butts. But then she’s a spraddleback retriever, so that’s why she likes to sniff butts for a totally different reason.’ Stop pretending all dogs that are some unspecified number of generations out but bearing the label from some classification some idiot breeders came up with can be reliably expected to behave in this or that particular way. That’s just dog racism. Lots of cartel violence in Mexico, doesn’t mean we think Mexicans are violent. We judge each one individually, because that’s the only way to be fair.
I have known friendly ones and mean dogs of other breeds. That being said different breeds have different inclinations and physical capabilities because they have been bred that way. Golden retrievers were bred to patiently wait, then retrieve something they want to eat on demand, and give it up even though they would like to eat it. So they tend to be obedient and smart and further have mouths that can hold something without damaging it. For whatever reason they tend to be super friendly with just about everything. Im lazy so this is my prefered breed. Its just easier to train. I have a friend who has trained all sorts of breeds and no matter the breed they are spectacular dogs, but the amount of time they have to train is different for different breeds. Again im lazy. I mean I swear I barely have to do training with goldens. They pick up things so quickly it does not even feel like training. Anyway I will upvote as I certainly disagree but I likely fall into a central view on this issue.
Lol, ITT: so many pitbull owners…
Do you also believe the same thing about German Shepards? Because pretty much all of the same points apply to them as well. Second most human attacks next to pitbulls.
Not statistically by any means. Pits are responsible for over 66% of deaths by dog attacks, German Shepherds 4.2%.
My vet friend says an unsocialized GSD is very difficult to deal with, but by stats alone it’s pit bulls by a mile.

its both, its the breed nature irresponsible owners. the fact that breed geneitics makes it aggressive means you have to have train it alot more.
Not an unpopular opinion. Pitbulls should be eradicated from this planet.
Well the pit lunatics sure are out in full force to down vote this opinion LOLOL.
Every pitbull I have raised has been the nicest dog ever. Absolutely no issues and never even a scary incident. This breed is coveted by those who want a scary powerful monster, so it’s used to make that, but it’s not the breeds fault. It’s the fault of humans who make monsters out of them. Stop typing walls of text to talk around the real problem like one of those MAGA fucktards
And as everybody knows, the plural of “anecdote” is “data”! Ha ha, just being silly. Let’s just take a quick look at the actual data and OH MY DEAR LORD
If this was the 19th century you’d be saying the same shit about bloodhounds. Cause you can’t tell the difference between human made trends and instincts

A husky would eat your baby if left unattended almost 100% of the time and yet nobody thinks of them as baby eating monsters.
Any large dog is dangerous. I don’t think most pit bulls are bred for fighting anymore.
Genetics are genetics. Pointers probably aren’t bred for anything but being pets either. But they still do point.
What’s the appeal of a pitbull anyway? I don’t have a dog but I think I’d go for a fluffy large and calm one. The opposite of that would be something like a bull terrier which I don’t find pretty at all. Or a pug which just looks deranged and I’ve never met one with a personality I like, but that’s not a dangerous breed, just a silly one.
Pugs can be really funny and charming, my pug was hilarious and cuddly and quite active. It’s not ethical to buy pug puppies of course and I’m certainly not defending that, but he was a stray in need of a home, and thankfully more exercise tolerant than average. At least they are a peaceful breed and can’t decide on a whim to rip your face off. Pits can also break out of or climb fences really easily, so your liability is high.
