One thing to note is more often people here reply with genuine comments and in good faith. There is also a lack of clever snarky comments and baiting due to the lack of karma system.

And the lack of karma also leads to more comments, as well. I liken lemmy to what the internet used to be like, where conversations among strangers happened regularly. It’s very rewarding and wholesome. Definitely not the “antisocial media” that reddit prides itself on.

Karma on reddit tracks the accumulated likes and dislikes a user has gotten on all of their posts. Lemmy does not have a number like that.

Edit: What this means in practice is that on Reddit there are some users who make a lot of low-effort posts to get that karma number to go up and get a sense of accomplishment from that (even when they get a negative reputation among the other users), whereas on Lemmy that’s not really a thing. Lemmy has power-users that become well-known, but they’re more well-liked because they aim to gain actual reputation instead of just farming a karma number.

This was the first thing that threw me off: people here tend to comment in good faith. I’m so used to people begging the question and generally having iron clad closed minds…from Reddit.

…but here conservations have often come to conclusion where I and another user agree to disagree amicably, or one of us moves towards the other in light of new information or a logical argument.

it’s really weird…but I hope it stays like that so I can get used to it.

I mean, yes and no. Most of the userbase is that way. But there are some users (and instances) that tend to be massive pains in the ass. So build and curate your blocklist too.

I was making light of your question … partly to have a bit of fun … and partly to show that the community enjoys sharing these silly little bits of movie quotes that act like memes. The one I was using is from the movie “The Naked Gun” (the original film from 1988 with Leslie Nielson)

A lot of the meme communities enjoy old slapstick movie content as there is a lot of memeable content there … films like ‘The Naked Gun’ series, Hot Shots, any of the Mel Brooks films and Monty Python.

Don’t be afraid to test your boundaries, comment as you like but with an open mind and kind heart … people will let you know if you’ve said or implied anything negative or positive. Don’t be discouraged if you get no response either … it’s not a popularity contest. The longer you stay, the more you comment, the more you get to know people and the more they get to know you and eventually you become a regular part of the community.

Welcome to Lemmy and welcome to the fediverse.

I switched from reddit awhile back. It is similar, but so far have seen a lot less hostility than reddit. I don’t have time for those types , so if they turn to insults rather than proper dialog I just block them, even if they weren’t talking to me directly. It makes it a much more pleasant experience

But seriously it is much friendlier, the only thing i do differently is i tag users who bother me or who i see being and agitator.

That way i see who it is and don’t react. I also try not to block people because we all have bad days and it’s kinda like killing them with no trial.

By ratio, there are way more communists than on Reddit. There are three major groups, anarchists, Marxist-Leninists, and liberals, and each instance tends to have more of one or maybe 2 than the others. Getting a feel for instance culture goes a long way.

A major difference I noticed with Lemmy from my time on Reddit is communities aren’t quite as rabid about strict adherence to their topic or gimmick. r/whatisthisthing banned me for seven days once for elaborating what an E6B flight computer is for. Because “This community is for IDENTIFYING the thing, not DISCUSSING the thing!” Not…so much of that around here.

That doesn’t seem true though, most actual leftists don’t like tankies and the people on Lemmy complaining about tankies seem to mostly be leftists themselves. Tankies are like LaRouchites, no one takes them seriously because the things they profess tend to be silly and they usually have that obnoxious College freshman master-debater energy. It’s not a left or right thing.

The whole point is that there isn’t really any clear cut difference between “tankies” and “actual leftists” because it’s a pejorative term that each person using it defines differently based on their own personal politics. Is critical support for Vietnam tankie? Cuba? Makhnovshchina? Ukraine? The Nordic Model? The Black Panthers? You’ll never get consistent answers from people yelling about tankies.

one takes them seriously because the things they profess tend to be silly and they usually have that obnoxious College freshman master-debater energy.

Ironically, this better describes the people who rail against “tankies” better than it describes anyone else.

I’ve been called a tankie for lots of reasons: criticising Elon Musk, condemning Israels genocide of the Palestinians, opposing invading Venezuela, condemning the US’s destruction of North Korea, not believing that far right American think tanks are trustworthy, calling Kamala Harris a genocide supporter, calling bullshit on the claim that Mao had one in ten Chinese citizens executed for being a western spy. Calling bullshit on the claim that Che Guevera committed genocide. Basically anything that runs counter to the average American neo-liberal’s world view.

        It’s the devs’ test instance.

The devs are Marxist-Leninists. They’re the admins of the instance. Therefore the instance has nuanced-to-positive views on Actually Existing Socialist (AES) states, and allows for criticism of Democrats from the left.

It’s been defederated by instances whose admins aren’t wiling to critically examine their lifetime of capitalist programming and are accustomed to Reddit’s universal condemnation of AES states.

Yes, but a new user needs to know the instance they join has pros and cons. Like another user stated, they joined .ml after lemm.ee closed and didn’t know why several communities they had subscribed to weren’t showing up.

Let’s be real for a second, lemmygrad, .ml and. hexbear are well known for blocking and being blocked on Lemmy. Users should know Lemmy isnt like reddit where each user can potentially see 100% of content, it’s dependent on your instance.

It’s fairly strafight forward, i just try and follow these two rules.

    1. Don’t be a cunt
    2. If in doubt, refer to Rule 1.
