Beyond All Reason (Total Annihilation community clone) is excellent and FOSS

Dwarf Fortress is free also (the Steam version is just a tile pack and some UI changes, Dwarf Fortress tile packs are legion)

I highly recommend Mindustry, and HedgeWars (Worms clone but with hedgehogs). And honestly Super Tux cart is pretty solid, even if bits of it feel dated.

Over the past like 5 years I have ever only used Epic for one rhing, collecting the free 1 to 2 games they offer every Thursday. I have like 200+ games from that alone. Just don’t buy anything from them and your good, people do not like Epic at all so this may get some downvotes but free is free to me.

Too bad epic is just trash and lacks basic functions that should be standard for any competent storefront. I used it for a free game once a few years ago and I couldn’t even play the game when my Internet died after I’d already played it.

Nothing like being so mad a shit service giving you a free product that you go and purchase the same product later from a real games store that had basic functionality.

To be honest I just don’t bother with the service at all, even if it were for the free games. Last time I tried to use it every time I’d attempt to log in, the application would only show a black window and nothing else. I contacted their support and they informed me that it was because I was trying to run the service at an unsupported resolution. I needed to lower the resolution of my desktop from 1440p to 1080p in order to view the login window. I asked them if I’d need to do this every single time I wanted to use the application and they said yes.

For shits and giggles, I tried it out and they were right. When I was at 1080p, I could actually see the login window. I finished logging in, saw the store front, increased my resolution back up to 1440p, and could no longer see the store front. I immediately uninstalled the application and haven’t touched their service since then.

It’s been quite a few years since this happened, so I assume they’ve probably fixed this particular issue but I specifically remember being completely baffled at how quickly they accurately determined that that was the issue (demonstrating it was a known issue), how odd it was that a windowed application would care so much about the resolution of my machine that it would just stop rendering entirely, and the audacity of the service as a whole to just accept that lowering your resolution was the only viable solution without even mentioning anything to the effect of it being an issue they’re actively working on fixing.

Basically the only part of that entire situation that reflected well on them was their support service I spoke with. Everything else (including their exclusivity contracts for games in the years following) has painted them in such a negative light in my eyes that I’ve never considered using service ever since, even knowing that the specific issue I had with their software was probably fixed a long time ago. Well, at least I assume it was.

Luckily these storefront issues don’t exist with Heroic Launcher.

I have a lot of free games.

I’ve had my PC for like 2 console generations, it still runs new games 60fps 4k, and if I really wanted to I could pirate basically any game.

Most older games on steam are $5 or less, and many of them are still very fun to play, also more recent games go on sale on steam all the time

Many older games are on GoG too, but as a whole, greed and all these damn launchers are the problem. Dev stops shipping or distributing copies - off to myabandonware as all software should instead of re-re-re-re-milking people and stuffing them into some ecosystem.

Yeah but, if you want legit free game you can just rob Epic.

Also there’s tons of f2p on steam, just brace yourself for the monetization.

Try Guild Wars 2 if MMOs are your thing. You can play a long time before ever needing any money to buy expansions.

100%. Combat is fun, random overworld events are better than static spawn points, and the map is enormous.

SWToR being f2p is another good, second-to-none story driver MMO you can sink plethora of hours before needing to sub for 1 month for latest “expanslop”.
