Cool, but it’d be a lot cooler if it wasn’t on Twitch.
E: really depressing to see that even people on the Threadiverse don’t understand Big Tech problems and how they impact our daily lives, or can even fathom the idea of anyone making a difference.
Where else, Kick?
OnlyZohrans.
He could livestream to multiple platforms.
Personally I’d enjoy a stream to any federated/open source platform like peertube.
The series will also be available live on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky.
Would it kill Lemmies to read the article
Still only corporate platforms unfortunately.
This feels a little like a “take this great thing and find something to complain about”.
I don’t think you’re recognizing the challenges of live streaming to thousands of people at once. This would destroy any existing Peertube instance, and there is no reason for NY to set up their own when most of the population is elsewhere. I’m all for federation, but the infrastructure isn’t there for this.
I’ll personally choose to celebrate when leaders do something great instead of nitpicking their platform choices.
This feels a little like a “take this great thing and find something to complain about”.
the “perfect” is the enemy of “good enough”
I’m not even complaining, just pointing out the obvious, even though I understand why it’s the way it is.
As the other commenter said in a reply to this, people are quick to complain about a better solution just because it isn’t perfect. But I’m not complaining because frankly I don’t care that much.
I’m not from NYC, I’m not from the USA and I’m not even from that continent.
It’s cool Zohran won the election, you guys should celebrate his feats and criticise his faults.
Would it kill Lemmies to read the article
I mean ideally he would put it on his own website or something. Owncast?
Is he going to replace twitch and YouTube altogether with his own website? No. So this would just create friction for users, but not give anyone an option for moving off big tech streaming platforms
Is he going to replace twitch and YouTube altogether with his own website? No.
What he is going to do and what he could do are 2 different discussions.
but not give anyone an option for moving off big tech streaming platforms
Again, he certainly could, very easily.
Because of the network effect, he’d have to spend billions to get enough infrastructure for his streaming service to be able to compete with YouTube and Twitch. Because people go where the content is, so a majority of content creators would have to start using it, rather than just himself.
Until that, it’s like Epic Games Store. They keep giving away free games and STILL nobody wants to go there because all their games are already on Steam. Doesn’t help that their launcher is shit too, but even if it wasn’t, most people wouldn’t move over.
he’d have to spend billions to get enough infrastructure for his streaming service to be able to compete with YouTube and Twitch
I was not at all suggesting that he enter the business of livestreaming…
Because people go where the content is, so a majority of content creators would have to start using it, rather than just himself.
“Where the content is” is owned by one of the richest tech billionaires in the world. One who is responsible for the destruction of more small businesses than anyone on the planet. One who bribed the President on several occasions, including with the ballroom, and with a $28M check. And I’m sure many other avenues.
As long as we continue going “where the content is” and refusing to go anywhere else, that’s where it will remain in perpetuity. Someone has to have the influence and the courage to make the content be somewhere else.
Until that, it’s like Epic Games Store. They keep giving away free games and STILL nobody wants to go there because all their games are already on Steam.
That’s not why at all. That’s because their platform sucks ass.
I was not at all suggesting that he enter the business of livestreaming…
See, the thing is, if whatever alternative platform he uses (which you proposed could be his own website) can’t facilitate a bunch of other creators moving over, then his effort is useless against the whole issue of Twitch, and only serves to make fewer people watch him. And to be fair, he’s not just streaming it on Twitch, he’s also doing it on YouTube, TikTok and several other shitty corporate platforms, because that’s where people are. At least you get a choice of which one to use, even if they all suck.
People don’t want to have to use 10 different platforms to follow the stuff they’re interested in. They want their one platform to show most of the content, and the content that’s not there might as well be ignored. Now if you had Mamdani, and several other people that some particular viewer cares about, all on one alternative platform, that would be enough for that person to consider watching content on two or three platforms, I’m sure. But nobody’s going to type an URL into their browser just for one politician in 2026. That’s how fucked we are as a society.
As long as we continue going “where the content is” and refusing to go anywhere else, that’s where it will remain in perpetuity. Someone has to have the influence and the courage to make the content be somewhere else.
I fully agree, but it doesn’t help unless there’s enough content “somewhere else” and “somewhere else” isn’t “different service for every streamer and politician”. The reason something like Nebula works is that a whole lot of content creators got together. And they pretty much all still upload to YouTube too, because they need the money - they still get the majority of their views from there, despite offering exclusive content and early access on Nebula. Now Nebula is paid so it has a higher barrier to entry for viewers, but it’s ad free and slop free.
You and I might go visit Mamdani’s website if he decides to stream on there, but millions of others will not, and he needs to reach them too. Personally, I’m not even the audience he needs to reach. I don’t live in the US, let alone NYC.
Personally I think he should also stream it here, but not get rid of the other alternatives just yet. And advertise that more prominently than Twitch or YouTube. Clearly he’s already doing multistreaming, it would be great if he could add a non-corporate platform as an alternative. He could also read comments from all platforms rather than just Twitch because there’s technology for that too, though it depends on what his solution is (not like a streaming software solution is super hard to replace though).
That’s not why at all. That’s because their platform sucks ass.
I acknowledged that, but there are tons of gamers who outright refuse to entertain the idea of using it even if it was good.
GOG doesn’t suck at all, and sees much smaller sales numbers than Steam for games that are listed on both. I know I’m personally guilty of buying CP2077 on Steam rather than GOG (despite the fact that I could still use Proton for the GOG version).
He’s been office for 5 months! Why isn’t everything perfect? Ffs, we have a guy in the white house trying to burn the world down so he can make a buck. Put your ire towards trump, but your thoughtful criticism towards Mamdani.
He’s been office for 5 months
What does that even mean? At what point in his office should he start transitioning to free platforms, and why?
Why isn’t everything perfect?
That’s just a slightly loaded question…
we have a guy in the white house trying to burn the world down
So…we shouldn’t concern ourselves with literally anything else?
Guess who gave a $28M bribe to The Guy In The White House Trying To Burn The World Down? The owner of Twitch.
What? They are supposed to use some small unknown platform? Like how do you expect people to be able to access something if they don’t know that it exists
He…tells them? The same way people access his Twitch livestream without knowing it exists. The same way we are finding out right now.
But how many people are going to actually watch it because they’re already using twitch? Probably a lot more than who are learning about it organically.

Because Twitch is owned by a tech oligopolist. One of a handful actively running this country into the ground. The one who paid Melania $28M to make a movie that no one wanted. (AKA a bribe). The one who’s responsible for killing more small businesses than anyone else, ever? I mean I could go on…
Well, fuck, I guess that means Democrats can no longer go on television, either, since most of those networks are also owned by nazis.
I guess we have to give up because this choad here doesn’t want to live in reality.
Good news, they don’t have to.
The personal attacks are not called for.
Sure they are.
The world is fucked up BECAUSE we stopped telling stupid people that their ideas are stupid.
I’ve never felt more strongly towards a comment before. Stupid people really are getting increasingly brazen. Enough is enough, tbh.
100%
You can point out why my ideas are bad without being uncivil. Now you’re just being a dick. And for what? The crime of suggesting that someone might embrace free platforms? That’s fucked, my guy.
Removed by mod
so name a social media company that is not shit.
Owncast. Piefed. Peertube. Mastodon. etc. etc. etc.
If you’re trying to reach people, you need to go where they are.
“Where they are” is actively being used to manipulate and control them. As long as he keeps “meeting people where they are”, that’s where they will remain, and he is actively contributing to perpetuating that. Change means taking them somewhere else.
They will remain there until content creators they regularly watch and enjoy start moving. Mamdani is not that. No one is going to be creating a twitch account just to watch this, nor would they do it for some much smaller platform they’ve never heard of. Mamdani is not the one that will get people to move to new platforms, at least, not before he gets them more interested in the first place. Young people like him specifically because he reaches out to them on a personal level on platforms they actually use.
I would be happily surprised to learn that any of those sites could actually support the traffic this generated
These are not sites, they’re software. Much like Lemmy. They can support as much traffic as you build them to support.
In an ideal world there would be federal servers set up, and every public servant would be entitled to an account.
E: who is downvoting me for stating facts?
He is trying to be the next FDR with modernized fireside chats, and I am vibing with it.
Yup. Mamdani is teaching the modern left how to spread the message. There is a lot of disdain from the left on social media. A lot of us are smart enough to recognise that socmed is vapid and shallow. But we’re not too bright to recognise that that is where people are at these days, no matter how dumb socmed is. That’s why the often criticism of the left is the poor messaging. Now I understand what that criticism mean.
Social media is the new plaza, like how radio, cinema and TV were during FDR’s time. As a matter of fact, the Nazis also recognised the potential power of radio. One of their early policies is to buy everyone a radio; so that the Nazis could control information. This is not different from today in which oligarchs and the far right also recognised the potential of socmed as a tool for control.
its the oldguard dnc that doesnt know how to reach thier voters, they stuck to the traditional MSM where everything is curated and controlled.
Ignoring social media has been the biggest mistake of the left across the world. In my home country, an objectively better and progressive candidate was outvoted by the son of an ex-dictator by a landslide, because the said candidate is an old school progressive who still does the old-fashioned way of convincing voters, by going door to door and relying on legacy media, instead of presenting a brand of herself in social media like Mamdani does. That’s when I realised “yup, social media is now where the frontline is, whether we like it or not.”
The problem of fighting for democracy using social media, is that the ones controlling the algorithm are precisely the ones that don’t want the “left” to succeed. It is essentially fighting a battle in the enemy’s field, where they control the land itself. At small scales, it might work. But it will never work when it comes to true important positions. I’d go as far as to say that the mirage that it works in cases like Mandani is part of their plan, to keep the left locked in their platforms “because that’s what works”. Here in my country, Brazil, I could clearly see the impacts of the algorithm changes they put in place after 2011, after the pro-democracy movements that started on Facebook. Their networks started to curb engagement from the left, and massively boost fake news, right-wing content, ultra nationalism, and such. It’s naive to think that social media can be used to win the populace back to the left. They’ll never let it happen.
i am so tired my glasses are starting to fail me and i read:
Major Zohran Mamdani is going to live (short i) on twitch in new streaming series.
so i pictured a netflix show where he lives on twitch 24/7 in a big brother type living room.
so i pictured a netflix show where he lives on twitch 24/7 in a big brother type living room.

This will 100% go off the rails with people pushing their own agendas, or purchased to push an agenda.
If this guy runs for president we will have many bots going “oh yeah what about that one time he hesitated to call it a genocide”. Don’t get me wrong it is %100 a genocide but equating someone with Trump because of this would be ridiculous, he is one of the most progressive democrats around which makes for a nice jumping board.
He was born in Uganda so he can’t run for president. No worries there.
We have a rapist, thief, traitor, and war criminal in the oval office. There are many immigrants who have more honor, integrity, and intelligence than Agent “Krasnov” Orange.
Sticking to rules, when the Grand Old Pedophile party uses them selectively, is a fool’s game. We must either elect Mamdani or AOC, preferably both, into top offices.
If the GOP protests? Punch them, and ignore their opinion. Because they don’t give a shit about law nor decency, and should face the consequences of breaching the social contract.
I kind of think blatantly violating the constitution is a good way to not get put on any ballots in the USA. Like the states board of elections would never go along with that. That’s silly talk.
Plenty of politicians that are deserving of the presidency exist aside from AOC.
plus had his slovenian “prostitute” get here on a faux genius visa/ citizenship.
dang it I could almost see the bots
That’s because you’re accustomed to imagining bots whenever you see opposition to genocide.
you haven’t even read my previous msg did you? oh wait judging by the single downvote on each post you did. I suppose you just did not want to process it in that case.
Sorry. I thought your initial comment was saying that the opposition to genocide that exists is petty and unreasonable and has no legitimate grievances.
Were you not saying that?
No what I was saying is more related to discussion in bad faith. I find discussions around things like “Bernie didn’t call it a genocide he called only it a horrific crime so he is no different from Trump” quite vacuous and possibly in bad faith too. For instance, I think that if he was the president, US would not be backing the genocide irregardless of whether he called it a genocide or not and that is what matters.
I agree with that. I guess I was just oversensitive because I see that sort of dismissal of genuine objection to genocide all the time.
Either of his parents American citizens when he was born?
Not that I’m aware of. Anyway safe bet he’s never going to be vp or president.
He can’t, he was not born in the USA
Neither can a treasonous felon rapist, I once thought.
Yeah I know
trump already put the Constitution in the trash, so it doesn’t matter 😛
Right!
He eats Dijon mustard!
Been waiting for such a long time for a politician to do this. NYC did an amazing job at electing him.
Castro used to do it.
It started as anyone could call.
Then it was selected callers and their ore screened questions
Then it was his team calling and asking the right questions
Then he stopped.
I hope there will be an army of mods, as well, to deal with the absolute tsunami of slurs that will be thrown at him.
“Chat, the billionaires are acting super sus while hungry New Yorkers are in need of a carry. So let’s flip the script. Spend your Bezos bucks here and you’ll help the needy. Let’s goooo!!!”
Honestly, if MAMDANI named his twitch channel currency “bezos bucks”, I would be very confused. But right now he’s earned enough good faith that I’d trust his vision.
Amazon prime gives you a “free” twitch sub, thus the bezos bucks.
…I completely forgot that amazon owns twitch.
We really should stop letting companies buy each other. In fact we should split the big ones up.
The mainstream press, being owned by the mega wealthy, hasn’t exactly been platforming and fair in its reporting of left wing candidates in general. This has now morphed to a strategy by left wind politicians to go directly to their voters on social media. Zack Polensky, the Green party leader in the UK, has drastically improved his parties standing simply by delivering their policies directly on Twitter and other social media. This is quite likely to become the way that left wing politicians operate in the near future. They potentially seek to gain leverage to fairer representation and presence in mainstream media, although that might not even matter given the mass exodus and distrust of the people of those old platforms.
But twitch is owned by Amazon and frankly they can and do moderate Twitch streams.
This is not supposed to be a discouragement of politicians connecting with the public via any means necessary.
I just want to point out the flawed logic of saying news media is owned by billionaires so it can’t be trusted, but twitch, also owned by a billionaire can somehow be trusted.
They aren’t yet putting up barriers since their sole purpose is people connecting to each other. There is every chance they do move to restricting access but I think it would be the death of Twitch and certainly Twitter if they started doing so. Social media doesn’t require us to trust some group of people to choose our content for us and as such is a lot less prone to that bias and billionaire control. That isn’t to say the billionaires don’t have an effect, on Twitter what people are exposed to by the algorithm is very intentional and controlled as is the front page roll on Twitch, but unlike mainstream media its still possiblr to see and connect with the unfavoured content and grass roots movements can still form. I would prefer this was all on the fediverse but its not where the people are yet.
I use twitch. It doesn’t take much at all to get a ban of any kind. I’ve seen twitch streamers get banned mid stream. I think this stream in particular is likely to attract a lot of people who disagree with his political leanings and want to troll. It’ll be heavily modded and there are likely to be topics that will not be discussed because they’re problematic enough that a troll could use twitch’s own guidelines against the stream.
it serves 2 purposes reaching the gen-z pop, if amazon decides to block him, then the viewers/audiences will know and it will cause a streisand effect.
I think this cuts two ways.
- If anything goes wrong with this stream at all, whether it’s Amazon’s fault or not, it will be perceived as if they sabotaged it by the people who support him.
- If nothing goes wrong then we have the same problem we had with ByteDance and Tik Tok, where the perception is that the platform is a "bastion of free speech that people who support him put more trust in. We saw how this went with Tik Tok. Where people were convinced that it was censoring them less and promoting more liberal content when in fact we know from recent news articles that this is not in fact the case.
Neither of these things should make twitch a good platform for this type of thing, but it does happen to be what is available and well known.
Hope he’s doing a world tour after he’s done with NYC :)
That usually how you keep the pyramids running. You offload debt to the larger party (the state) and suspend pension contributions to the people, and say taxing the rich balanced the budget.
The next move is to become governor, and then stop state pension contributions, and offload debt to the federal government, and say taxing the rich solved this issue.
Then run for president. The plan will work for 4-8 years and when you leave an entire generation with no retirements and the debt gets passed to the next generation, you can blame the next guy!
Oh you sweet, stupid child.
I mean that’s what he already is doing
So that debt the state is paying for…why do you think NYC had it in the first place?
Even with this “offloaded debt,” NYC citizens receive less for their tax dollars than the rest of the state
Oh i get it, but the 12 billion he saved was 11.5 billion of can kicking down the road.
As if govs aren’t in stupidly unreasonable amounts of debt already by spending money on corporate welfare and death machines. And corruption. Let them have a small treat.
I personally don’t foresee this being that good of an idea. I foresee disinformation bots, porn link bots, and hate comments forcibly flooding the chat to ensure nothing actually happens, with not enough moderators to deal with it all. That, and twitch refusing to help moderate and instead shutting the account down in an attempt to silence him for big daddy Baldo.
its not like traditional MSM is going to give him a fair light, where the propaganda is even worst. hes targeting his audience, young gen-z people and maybe some milleneals. hes villified by both old guard DNC and the gop.
Bruh is going to debate mog city council

I have never been on, nor have I any desire to ever watch content on, Twitch. But I’m glad a politician is using media from a younger generation þan þe traditional ones, and þat at least it isn’t a FANG platform. Maybe someday þey’ll start gracing whatever Fediverse descendant is around.
Twitch is owned by Amazon
Bummer.
He’s also streaming on Bluesky
The series will also be available live on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky.
Some are FAANG.
btw, do you typeout each thorn or you have an extension or something doing it automatically?
Why not <compose>,<t>,<h>?
Exactly. Alþough, on mobile it’s just a popup secondary character on my keyboard.
Gotta support Amazon somehow.
gotta use the platforms where you can reach people

Wahhh he’s not perfect wahhh he’s not doing literally everything all at once wahhhh.
Grow up. He’s doing more for actual people than just about anyone else I can think of in recent memory. Take your love for being negative and upset somewhere else.
