The funniest part is the stores and their suppliers are pushing for SNAP benefits in the interest of profits, so the profiteering is fighting itself.
I think it’s more than that, they are heavily invested in a rather nasty version of the “just world hypothesis”: if bad stuff happens to these people, like being poor and hungry, it’s because they are bad and deserve it.
It’s the same logic at play for blaming victims or rape and sexual violence.
Because the alternative, that the world isn’t fair and horrible stuff happens to good people and good things also happen to horrible people, is too unpleasant and exhausting to contemplate and requires complex thought.
Specifically, breaking the just world illusion is unpleasant and exhausting because it removes the only reassurance they have that they are good people.
If they prosper in a just world then they are good. If you convince them the world is unjust then they have to grapple with being an awful person who has done and said awful things.

A lot of it has to do with an inflated view of one’s self and persecusion complex. Studies have shown that the more conservative one is the better off one thinks they will be. When the whole inheritance tax was being talked about all these poor conservtives thought some day they will be so well off the tax would affect them when in reality their lifetime gross income wouldn’t be enough if they saved it all. The whole “work hard and you will get everything” idea is burned into their brains inspite of reality.
When you then look at any achievement by these same people they make it out to be some crazy effort on their side. All hardships were the extreme and targeting them, in their warped view. They don’t realize their struggles were the same as everyone else and they were helped out in many ways that no one ever picks themselves up by their bootstraps.
So they have this “my life was the worst” and “i pulled myself up with no help” view of their lives that everyone else is just shit. In reality they are so delusional that even common decency is forign to them. Pile on that many are Christians if poor and narcissist and sociopaths if rich the complex grow many fold.
I think this is closer. I read once that the happiest people in the world were conservatives living in countries with a strong social safety net, and lots of government subsided programs, because they simultaneously benefited from the programs and believed their success was something they achieved on their own.
So even if they were poor and got out, they take a different lesson from it. Not “there but for the grace of God go I” or “wow, I’m so glad I got subsidized education and food when I needed it so that I could get here” but more “I got mine fuck you”

A new law should be passed, if you have a job and qualify for SNAP then your employer needs to increase your pay by 100 percent until you don’t qualify for SNAP anymore.

There’s nothing evolutionary about it. Humans have been doing altruism and cooperation for hundreds of thousands of years. It’s cultural.
I strongly believe that greed is a vestigial trait from a time when scarcity was real. Ones instinct to preserve their bloodline would have necessarily involved greed, me and mine first. I also believe that some early humans developed the ability to overcome that instinctual drive, and we call that empathy. Life is actually a whole lot easier when you understand that greedy people are developmentally inept, their genealogy prevents them from having the ability to empathize with others. It’s not to say it isn’t a problem, but sometimes having an explanation to why a thing is the way it is helps understand it better.

Because the poor who would otherwise struggle to buy wheat or barley got it, and could buy other stuff, even luxury items. The result is that more and more trade flowed directly to Rome and people made a bundle doing it.

Rice and beans have historically been pretty cheap. You can survive on SNAP if you’ve got a place to live and no other options. You certainly won’t be thriving.
It’s the economic equivalent of emergency life support.
The only way I managed to have somewhat decent meals while on SNAP was being lucky enough to have a decently sized discount grocer nearby.
That also meant all the meat I bought was only 2-3 days from the sell-by date, and they weren’t fucking around with that. If you didn’t freeze it, it started going off quickly. Most of my produce came from cans or microwave bags, anything “fresh” was as close to going off as the meat. Dry goods were a mixed bag of overstock, damaged out, and sold so poorly in other stores it got shunted off to discounts just to move.
The freshest things they got in were milk and eggs. Those sold out within the day of delivery. If you couldn’t get there early, you went without.
I know it differs per state but for a single member household the max benefit is approx $300 a month. It goes up when adding more family members, with a household of 4 getting approx $1k per month. I guess it is possible that a state offers lower benefits per family member, so $176 isn’t too far of a stretch per person. The fact of the matter is that he did it and got away with it, not how many people he technically robbed.
In 2019 I lost my job and ended up on unemployment. At the time my sons were all still living with me, 20, 18, and 17yo. Unemployment +1 dependant was enough to cover my modest mortgage. My other 2 sons paid the utilities and anything else came from my savings account. We received $15mo in Snap benefits.
It’s hard not to slap people who think people with Snap are skating through life.

I was on snap in college and I had to resubmit the paperwork to apply every 3 months. What I got would change every time I refiled. I feel like it had a lot to do with which caseworker I got. Sometimes the paperwork would come in the mail past the deadline for the interview and I would have to restart the process.
