Sadly, my enameled cast iron pot chipped. It flakes off at the edges of the chip, so not food safe anymore.
This pot is my go to for making spaghetti sauce, stews, etc. I baby it, no metal utensils, silicon or wood only.
It’s had that little crack forever, so I think this is related. I’ve emailed the manufacturer to see if they’ll replace it under their lifetime warranty.
I will miss this pot, it was a Christmas gift from my spouse and I’ve made many good meals with it. It’s weirdly sentimental to me.
Perfect amount of dull. 5 stars. Hope it works out with the manufacturer
5 stars is a bit too interesting for this place. i’d say give it 3/5. a perfect score.
Thanks, I’ll find out in a couple business days
It can be a bread baking vessel now. Just line it with parchment.
(not a man, pls lmk whether comments are only for the boys here)
Hurts to look at, my enamel cast iron Dutch oven is precious to me too.
You’re most definitely welcome here!
Comments are not only for men, the admin created an instance called dullsters to be more explicitly inclusive. But this version of the community has inertia.
I interpret the “men” wording as a gender neutral denomination of the species as a whole. Man on the moon, mankind, mouse and men, etc.
And even if not, I think you’d have to search far and wide to find anyone who’d be strict about that part.
As for the other part, and whether you’re allowed here, that all depends: Are you dull?
The comm is open to anybody, we’re happy you’re here ☺️
This is the only pot I dipped
Into each sauce which I did whip
Each ‘everyman’ should sip a sip
For the favored pot, doth chipped
That sentimental feeling is not weird at all, I have a loving relationship with my cooking tools. My wife unsurprisingly does approve.
Sorry for your loss.
Out of curiosity, is this a Lodge, or a Le Creuset, or something else?

If it’s a high-end brand like a Le Creuset, they should replace it under warranty.
That’s what I’m hoping.
I don’t want to mention the brand because I have other cookware from them that is great, this kind of thing can happen to any company.
Wait pans can become unsafe for food? Ugh all my pans are damaged like this or scratched.
If your pan is damaged and has enamel flaking off, yes, it is dangerous to use.
You can’t digest enamel and a flake could injure your insides from your throat to your digestive tract to your anus.
Non stick coatings also inevitably fail over time, but I’d say they’re less outright dangerous.
I have one line this that I still use for bread, just make sure it’s always got baking parchment inside, no prob
I might have to give this a try, I’ve never made bread.
Try this recipe (link) but do a round boule. You can’t go wrong, the time and material cost is very minimal, especially if it saves your prized pan.
Can it be safely re-enameled?
I doubt think so, since it’s flaky I wouldn’t trust any new enamel to stick.
Thought this review was interesting: https://cultflav.com/products/staub-4qt-cocotte-with-glass-lid?view=reviews
By the look of it, it got way too hot a number of times, and should have been decommissioned some time ago.
Mostly they come off with vinegar and elbow grease, my partner does crank the heat higher than I usually go though
Tell me you don’t have a wok burner, without telling me you don’t have a wok burner. I highly recommend them. You can get a burner that you can attach to a propane tank at most Asian supermarkets.
(not a guy)
Naah, soak those stains in vinegar for a couple days and they’ll come right up. The chip is entirely different.
Sorry for your loss
What brand of you don’t mind me asking?
How long have you had it?
Two or three years, it’s a major brand, I don’t want to drop the name since I don’t think it’s representative/everything else we have from them is excellent.
2-3 years of heavy use I’d bet 50/50 it’s your fault the enamel chipped, not theirs … and I mean that without any shade just if anything you’re bound to have some something.
So from my end that’s not an indictment, but I get where you’re coming from.
If they wanna replace it let us know then?
I don’t use any metal on it, what am I missing?
nothing, just something coulda happened somewhere in the years you’ve had it.
It’s not uncommon. I literally meant no shade my dude.
Okay, totally read that as shade lol
Not meant that way at all, I take care of all my stuff but everyone else wants to ruin it, filthy hobbitses
I assume you live similarly
Did you ever pour any cold liquids in it when it was really hot?
Nope.
Only other thing I can think of (since you already said you didn’t use metal utensils) is that something stuck to the enamel and pulled off a chip. It’s not very common, but some kinds of chemical bonds with glass can be strong enough to break the glass when pulled away (enamel is a type of glass).
The tensile strength of glass varies dramatically and randomly based on invisible defects. That may be what happened here.
Do you stack your cookware up in the cupboard? Potentially without a felt separator between each?
Not the Dutch oven
For pans we have felt dividers. They’re great!
My Dutch ovens and other enamelware get put away with lids on so they can’t be stacked.
My son still finds a way …
Just like Frosted Flakes?
(I think we found Tony’s Lemmy account.)
Listen here you little pipsqweek
I am the reason the other tigers have fake eyes on the backs of their heads. I am eternal. I am the one who crunches.
If you mention this to anyone I might have to add a human skin rug next to my tiger skin rug.
