People who believe MSG is any more terrible for you than table salt understand jack shit about health lol
Well eating a shit load of fried “Chinese food” that happens to have msg makes me feel ill, so what else could it be?
Your pancreas probably rejected the grease of the fried food perhaps? If you look at your stool and see liquid parts that float above water, that means you might have EPI, a condition that may become life-threatening if left untreated. Always look at your stool before flushing when your gut hurts, your future GI doctor will likely thank you for your insight on steatorrhea. Hope you’re doing alright there now, stay safe!
I believe their comment is missing a /s
Couldn’t really tell, still was some good advice though; gotta make sure your shit’s in order.
This whole thing is cancer… What’s wrong with fluoride?
He said fluoridation was too important to be left to the generals. When he said that, 50 years ago, he might have been right. But today, fluoridation is too important to be left to politicians. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought. I can no longer sit back and allow Communist infiltration, Communist indoctrination, Communist subversion and the international Communist conspiracy to sap and impurify all of our precious bodily fluids.
On no account will a Commie ever drink water and not without good reason.
Nor is there anything wrong with MSG or prozac
I mean, I definitely don’t consider prozac part of a meal.
Common side effects include loss of appetite, nausea, diarrhea, headache, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, and sexual dysfunction. Serious side effects include serotonin syndrome, mania, seizures, an increased risk of suicidal behavior, and an increased risk of bleeding.
All medicines can have negative side effects on certain people. I don’t recommend abandoning all modern medicine.
I do, return to tradition! Chew on this willow leaf.
Literally every drug claims to have side effects and virtually no one ever experiences them because it only affects 0.01% of the population. And then they just have a slightly different alternative and now fine.
Yeah, I think that one’s just FUD, because fluoride is added to the water by the US government.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation_in_the_United_States
Fluoride in the water to dumb the masses is part of their conspiracy theory. They call it the fluoride stare and think you shouldn’t drink tap water.
I just can’t imagine being so simple minded that I would ignore actual science, and instead equate ingesting fluoride with a way they’ve seen people stare? It’s just so insanely stupid, all of it.
Its not hard for people to believe, the lead stare exists. Scientists have lied on behalf of tobacco and fossil fuel lobbies. Its got all the soil for a believable conspiracy theory to grow.
And independents scientists called them out. I haven’t heard anyone trying to claim that fluorine is dangerous.
There is a very big difference, that they don’t understand, between “a scientist said” and “scientific consensus”. This (sometimes purposeful) misunderstanding comes from their fundamental refusal to understand what science actually is.
In all fairness…GIMP cannot do that.
Of all the FOSS software I’ve used, GIMP is by far the furthest behind the commercial competitor. Adobe sucks ass in a lot of ways, but Photoshop and Lightroom are amazing products.
I do prefer Inkscape to Illustrator in a lot of cases. Especially with SVG support. Illustrator actually kinda sucks at importing SVG files.
Perhaps I’m pedestrian when it comes to image editing, but idk what it is that Gimp can’t do that’s regularly needed. Aside, of course, from AI features that draw for you.
[Cries in CAD]
True enough.
I’m spoiled in GIS with QGIS. I’ve been using it professionally for years.
I use Photoshop for work, and I keep GIMP installed as a conversion tool because for some reason Photoshop is an absolute wimp when it comes to opening downloaded PNG or WEBP images. About 1/4 of the time I get “Not a PNG” or “Can’t open image due to a programme error.” Clicking the Help option in the error dialogue takes me to Adobe’s help page about saving images, not opening them.
GIMP has effortlessly opened every single image I’ve thrown at it. After exporting from GIMP, suddenly Photoshop works. Bad look for the industry standard image editing programme.
I do like InDesign tho
I’ll say this for GIMP: it is a well-named piece of software. I do appreciate honesty. And I hate GIMP.
Watch out for those chemtrails!
Me keeping a W11 laptop around exclusively for Fusion360
Revit, AutoCAD, Rhinoceros, Bluebeam, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign. Virtual machines are, unfortunately, not ideal professionally. Other solutions like Crossfire and Winboat are hit or miss, but mostly miss. My biggest hope for SteamOS isn’t that games continue to improve, but that other large corpos will start to take Linux that much more seriously soon.
I’m pretty happy with FreeCad.
I think this is relevant to the topic. I don’t think it violates any copyright “ToS”–New to the site, as it was Linus himself that posted it. I’ll share it. He talks about why he pays Adobe 10k+k USD a year.
From what I remember, that boiled down to ‘it is more important to consistently pump out lots of content instead of letting staff learn and use something new’ which… I don’t have a very good opinion of him but that’s another oof.
Posting a YouTube video never violates copyright lol
Nothing wrong with MSG. It’s the building block of the savory taste the same way sodium chloride is the building block of the salty taste.
The whole thing about MSG sensitivity and it being bad for you was largely xenophobic in origin, and a fascinating example of the nocebo effect.
In college I remember hearing about a study where they gave people who claimed to have MSG sensitivity a Chinese meal and an Italian meal. They claimed to have symptoms after the Chinese meal. But that particular Chinese meal had no MSG in it. Meanwhile, people didn’t report symptoms from the Italian meal, which was chock-full of MSG.
Do yourself a favor: get a shaker of MSG from your local grocery store and put that shit on eggs (along with salt). It’s amazing what a pinch of “the flavor enhancer” does.
Edit: also nothing wrong with fluoride in the water at the doses we get it. It’s good for developing stronger teeth.
I live in the Netherlands, where we don’t have water fluoridation because of legal principles. Our laws don’t allow medication without knowledge and consent, and fluoride is considered part of that. So if one person disagrees, you can’t do it, so we don’t do it.
As a result, we have markedly worse dental quality than in places that have naturally high fluoride content
The issue I have with MSG is that if you put it in everything, it becomes your new norm. I would ideally like to minimize how much MSG I eat, and keep it feeling special.
Indeed, same with salt or any other spice!
I reckon not quite “any other” spice, especially since that raises the question of what is and isn’t a spice, but I suppose the principle is mostly true. One caveat would be that spices can be good for you, whereas AFAIK MSG is generally just neutral.
White people are never beating the allegations
Replace the word MSG with salt and see how dumb that sounds. Adding MSG isn’t a flavor, it just brings out the flavor in the foods it’s a part of. It’s not actually “special”, it is perfectly normal and just makes all your food taste better in general.
You can absolutely ruin your palette with oversalting, or over-MSG-ing your food though.
Adding too much and adding to everything are not the same.
It does kinda work with salt, and with sugar. Just because I’m used to salt doesn’t mean people don’t have a tendency to use too much salt.
MSG is naturally occurring in a lot of things, including tomatoes, and so are sugars - and in the same vein, I don’t want to be dependent on adding more of it to enjoy the taste of food. Of course, it’s a bit late for me, the best time to be getting used to simpler flavors is as a kid, but I thankfully wasn’t getting that much extra MSG, so I can at least appreciate food without that additive.
Eh, it’s never too late. Our palates can adjust.
Dating someone with a dietary need for low sodium intake meant I started cooking with less salt. After a few months of that, foods I used to like (such as plain potato chips) seemed too salty to me. I buy the lightly-salted versions of snacks now, when possible.
A bonus side effect - by cooking with less salt, I’ve been exploring other options for seasoning. I use a much wider range of spices/herbs now than I did before, leading to more interesting and complex dishes. I’d call that a win-win!
Yeah if it was bad you wouldn’t see three East-Asian countries in the top 3 of life expectancy.
Big ass bottle of MSG in the drawer with the rest of the bulk spices. It is mandatory that my food is properly seasoned.
I make a “savory salt” that I just use in place of salt. It’s not a miracle or anything, but it’s definitely good.
By weight:
90% salt
7.5% MSG
2.5% I + G https://www.amazon.com/Sodium-Inosinate-Guanylate-350-gram/dp/B07ZQS2DL2
thanks I was gonna type all that out 👌
The msg “scare” was such bullshit. MSG is the fuckin bomb for making those quick meals taste great when you’re in a rush. And good meals even better when you got time.
Yeah i sprinkle they shit in everything i cook
Where can I find open source friends? I’d like to compile them myself
I’m already available as an executable, a few known bugs but they won’t accept pull requests for patches on oneself, something about eternal life or something.
I mean uhhhhhh beep boop.

Look my laptop came with an NVIDIA GPU I have to use the drivers
the nvidia drivers are open-source now, right? (ignoring firmware blobs)
Last I heard NVidia’s open source drivers are garbage. Which is impressive given that their proprietary drivers are also garbage.
Garbage still.
Not the one I’m using. Maybe they have open drivers, but the one I had to use to get a working CUDA isn’t
